EXCLUSIVE: “If the hero says yes, the film moves ahead”: David Dhawan on industry shift

Veteran filmmaker David Dhawan has opened up about the shifting power dynamics in the film industry in an interview with Bollywood Hungama, noting a significant change in how projects are initiated today. Drawing from his decades-long experience, Dhawan highlighted that the control has gradually moved away from producers to leading actors.

“Today, the hero drives the project. You have to believe that,” he said, explaining how a film’s momentum often depends on an actor’s approval. He added, “If the hero says yes, the project moves ahead,” underlining how central stars have become to the filmmaking process. Comparing it to earlier times, Dhawan pointed out, “Earlier the producer would choose the hero,” marking a clear contrast in how the industry once functioned.

Dhawan also emphasised the importance of alignment between actors and directors in the current landscape. “If the tuning between the hero and director is right, the film gets made,” he noted, suggesting that creative synergy now plays a key role in greenlighting projects. He further explained how this impacts financing, saying, “If I have a hero with me, a producer will come and say, ‘Let’s do it.’”

Speaking about the pressures actors face today, David Dhawan advised caution and thoughtful decision-making. “Today you also have to be very careful while choosing films,” he said, pointing to the increasingly competitive and fast-moving nature of the industry. He further stressed the importance of backing a project fully once committed, noting, “If you have said yes to a film, then make it honestly,” and urged actors to avoid insecurity, adding, “There may be another actor also. That’s fine. Don’t get insecure.”

Highlighting the financial stakes involved, Dhawan reminded actors of their responsibility towards producers, saying, “Put your shoulder into it completely, because the producer has also put in money. Don’t put him in trouble.” He also underlined that success and failure are part of the journey, but commitment should remain constant, adding that actors must focus on giving their best regardless of the outcome.

Despite these changes, Dhawan maintained that the core of filmmaking remains rooted in conviction and clarity. His reflections offer insight into an industry that continues to evolve, where adaptability and strong choices are essential for survival.
