There were unconfirmed reports about the sequel of the 2001 political drama Nayak: The Real Hero doing the rounds last year. A few reports also said that the film’s producer Deepak Mukut sold the rights of the sequel to the lead actor Anil Kapoor. However, at the start of this year, Mukut cleared the air and said that he and Kapoor and making the sequel together.
Directed by Shankar, Nayak also starred the likes of Amrish Puri, Rani Mukerji, Paresh Rawal and Saurabh Shukla. In an exclusive chat with Bollywood Hungama, Shukla was asked if he has been approached for the sequel of Nayak now that it’s been officially announced, he said, “No, I haven’t been approached yet. If they approach me, I will see.” The film saw him play the role of Pandurang, a member of the ruling party headed by Chief Minister Balraj Chauhan (Amrish Puri).
When asked whether he would consider doing the sequel if he is offered, Shukla was quick to say, “That will all depend on what the story and the script is.”
Nayak told the story of a news channel cameraman Shivaji Rao, played by Kapoor. He gets promoted as a journalist after which he takes a scathing live interview of the CM. After the CM has no answers to his questions, he challenges Shivaji to become the CM of the state for one day and see how difficult the job is. Shivaji agrees and faces the consequences.
During the course of the conversation with Shukla, it was pointed out to him that his character Kallu Mama from Ram Gopal Varma’s Satya (1998) is still immensely popular. To this, he said, “It feels great. I am very grateful. It’s very humbling. I think I am very lucky that I got to do a film that is in public memory even after more than 25 years and the character I played is still fresh in public memory. It feels very good that your performance touched the audience in such a way that they are remembering it even after 25 years.”
Shukla has recently been in the news for his directorial debut Jab Khuli Kitaab, which is currently streaming on ZEE5.
