Harshvardhan Rane’s popularity went to another level after Sanam Teri Kasam, especially among the females. Sadly, the film didn’t perform well in cinemas when it was released in 2016. But due to touching moments, hit songs and of course the dashing Harshvardhan, the film amassed a huge fan base. And this fan base has come out in huge numbers for the re-release of Sanam Teri Kasam. The film, as per initial reports, has broken all records of re-release with its opening day numbers. A day before Sanam Teri Kasam arrived in cinemas, Harshvardhan Rane spoke exclusively with Bollywood Hungama about the film’s re-release and a lot more.
You literally took out a procession of fans to the office of producer Deepak Mukut and demanded Sanam Teri Kasam’s re-release. Last year, you went to colleges and distributed pamphlets for the release of Dange (2024). How do you get these marketing ideas?
(Smiles) Only you have brought this (Dange promotional strategy) up. I believe tremendously in on-ground promotions. I don’t have a team whom I can instruct to execute a certain promotional strategy. I just know that kapde pehenno aur ghar se nikal jao! In Dange, the situation was different and accordingly, I distributed pamphlets. I’ll do that here as well once it’s in cinemas. But the first step was to get the film in theatres. I had to tell the producers that the film has received a lot of love. I used my Instagram handle for it. I asked my followers for Sanam Teri Kasam’s re-release. I decided that once I receive 10,000 comments, I’ll approach Deepak sir. But I ended up getting a whopping 37,000 comments. I realized that maamla serious hai aur yeh dekh ke mujhe himmat mili. Hence, I assembled the fans and we all reached Deepak sir’s office.
This is what I know and I’ll continue doing this even in the future. I don’t need anyone’s support. I don’t mind if people don’t support me. Don’t try to attempt something through your phone; go and do it. This is my mantra.

Why did you and the makers decide to re-release Sanam Teri Kasam on February 7? It’s a very crowded week full of new and other older releases…
It started with a silly actor ki zid! It was built up by the execution of a sensible producer and later, it was implemented by the audience bookings. It was my zid that we should re-release the film on February 7. Deepak sir and their team gave sound advice that we should instead come on February 21. But my gut feeling said that February 7 would be the apt release date. So, I replied, ‘Koi baat nahin sir. Fir agle saal aate hai’ (smiles). I was like ‘8 years have passed. Ek aur saal nikal jaayega’. Then Deepak sir realized, ‘This guy has never spoken like this before’! Then, with all his might, he took the decision.
I always give this analogy when somebody asks me if the producer is important or director. I reply, ‘The father is the producer. The mom is the director. The father brings the money, which helps them to buy the vegetables. The mother has the recipe because of which she’s able to cook. Now, you can’t cook without either the vegetable or the recipe. Now you decide who’s more important (smiles).
That’s what I say for those waiting for the sequel. The father and mother have to be married. Also, the work is going on the recipe, that is the script. We don’t believe ki kuch bhi bana ke de do. With great power comes great responsibility. Similarly, with great love comes great responsibility. If your girlfriend is showering love on you, its your responsibility ki aap usko sar pe bitha ke rakho.
Do you think people are going in hordes to watch the film due to the guilt factor? They regretted not watching it in cinemas in 2016 and hence, want to give back to this film…
It’s a very solid question. I don’t think a person acts due to one aspect. Guilt must be 20% of it. Ultimately, I want the producer to emerge victorious, more than myself. I want to see a gunsmith firing me as a weapon. I don’t want to be the sharpshooter. That’s you. I am the weapon. If you fire well, credit will go to you. When Manu Bhaker hits the bullseye, does anyone say ‘Waah kya gun hai aapki’? Instead, they say ‘Kya shooter hai’. Hence, I want shooters to use me as a weapon. I have that feeling for Deepak sir and also for Nilesh Sahay, who’ll be making my next film.
This film belongs to the tearjerker category. There is a huge audience for films that people want to see just to cry…
You said something very important here. Many girls messaged me, ‘Release the film. We just want to cry’. I was stunned. This taught me that we just want to be touched. Either make us laugh or cry. But sadly, we are not able to do so. Also, it's difficult to make people laugh or cry. And if you manage to do so, then nothing like it.
Your female fan following increased tremendously after Sanam Teri Kasam. Today, if I had told my female friends that I was coming to meet, most of them would have bunked office and would have tagged along to see you! Such is the craze for you. How does it feel?
I’ll answer by giving an example. When it comes to the film Pushpa, we love everything about that character. We love Allu Arjun and also him playing Pushpa. It’s a culmination of a lot of factors and the same happened in this film as well. I don’t think these people are following me per se. If that was the case, all the films of the big actors would have been hits. They would have never given a single flop. But that doesn’t happen. We might assume ‘they are my fans’ but the fact is that they are fans of me in the film. This is a harsh reality that many actors won’t admit but I’d like to accept it.
Have you spoken to your co-star Mawra Hocane about the re-release of Sanam Teri Kasam? Incidentally, she got married a few days ago…
Well, all I can say is that I’d like the film’s commercial success to be the biggest wedding gift for Mawra (smiles).
A conversation on Sanam Teri Kasam is incomplete without the mention of Himesh Reshammiya’s unforgettable soundtrack…
I feel this film has three pillars. The father brought the vegetables, the mother cooked the food. And the one feeding the food to the child is the nani, who is the music director in this case. Just the way Nani puts food in our mouths, Himesh sir put songs in our ears (smiles).
It’s a double dhamaka for Himesh Reshammiya this week as his film Badass Ravi Kumar is also releasing…
I’d like to inform your readers that tomorrow, the first thing I’ll do is watch Badass Ravi Kumar. Only then I’ll check the audience's reaction to Sanam Teri Kasam. Himesh sir is a genius. He’s not a normal human being. Unki value jitni jaldi samaj jaao, utna accha hai. We have this habit of giving due to talented people very late. He knows the pulse of the audience and knows how to penetrate into their hearts.
Will Himesh Reshammiya compose songs for Sanam Teri Kasam 2?
If Himesh sir doesn’t sign Sanam Teri Kasam 2, toh main unke ghar ke neeche chala jaunga. You know my style (smiles).
Is he not locked yet?
I don’t know yet. This is a producer’s call. An actor shouldn’t focus on these things as it's not in their domain.
