Dhurandhar (2025) and the recently released Dhurandhar The Revenge have generated unprecedented craze. Every department in the film has won praise, and the action is no exception. While a section of viewers had reservations about the gore, the action has largely been appreciated for being both cinematic and realistic, a hallmark of veteran action director Aejaz Gulab’s work. In an exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungama, he spoke about the film’s action, working with Aditya Dhar and more.

What feedback have you received for Dhurandhar The Revenge? Did you go to the cinema halls to check the audience reaction?
Yes, I did go to the theatres and the reaction has been very good. Every action sequence has received a lot of appreciation. I saw some ladies shutting their eyes in violent scenes! Thankfully, people are overall enjoying it.

Besides you, the film has 3 more action directors – Sea Young Oh, Yannick Ben and Ramazan Bulut. Please tell us what the arrangement is when there are multiple action directors in a film…
Aditya Dhar sir had hired them with the idea that they would independently execute certain action scenes. However, he wasn’t fully satisfied with the choreography. That said, they gave valuable inputs and also choreographed some portions. Meanwhile, Aditya sir gave me the authority to execute those scenes. So, I looked after the safety aspects, the props and equipment required, and the technical execution of each shot.

Yannick Ben executed a couple of killing scenes in an action montage. Sea Young Oh helped us in the climax shoot. But I executed the Arshad Pappu gang shootout scene, Sanju Baba firing and explosion sequence, etc.

This is your second film with Akshaye Khanna and your first film with Ranveer Singh. How was it working with them?
With Akshaye, I had worked in just one film – Tees Maar Khan (2010). But there was no action. The scene involved them doing masti. That’s it.

Both Akshaye and Ranveer were very good and cooperative. For several sequences, Ranveer would dedicatedly come and train with us. When he would see the ‘previs’ (pre-visualization), he would feel ‘Mujhe yeh moves seekhna chahiye’. We would train him accordingly and familiarize him with the whole process. That helped us to be better prepared during the shoot.

As for Akshaye Khanna, he is a senior actor and has already worked so much. Hence, he would not come for training. Unko waise bhi training ki zaroorat padti nahin thi. Even Ranveer didn’t require training but for his character, the action was very important as he had never done anything in this zone before. In Simmba (2018), there was no raw combat-style action. There, he was supposed to play to the gallery while doing action. But in Dhurandhar, there was a lot of physical combat.

The climax action fight is very lengthy. Yet, it’s very interesting…
The reason it worked so well was because Aditya sir’s vision was very clear. He believed that if an action scene stayed in one location for too long, the audience would get bored. Hence, he planned it in a way that the action began in the Muridke mosque, then shifted to the fields, followed by the container yard, and finally the railway track. This constant change in setting kept the viewers further engaged.

An interview on Dhurandhar The Revenge is incomplete without talking about the extreme violence. Do you think the film would have had so much gore if it was made 10 years ago?
The rise in violence on screen has happened due to OTT. During the lockdown, people got accustomed to watching international content. In such films and shows, there’s barely any censorship. Even OTT has no censor. Hence, people are now used to watching brutality. Meanwhile, our films never had so much gore due to censorship and other reasons. But gradually, it began to grow, and with Dhurandhar, audiences got to witness an unprecedented level of gore. That further made it interesting and also one of the reasons why people felt that Dhurandhar’s action was at par with international standards.
