Action director Aejaz Gulab is getting a lot of accolades for his work in Dhurandhar The Revenge. He began his journey assisting action directors in 1989 and became a full-fledged action director in 2007 with Shootout At Lokhandwala (2007). In his illustrious journey, he got a chance to work with several superstars and he opened up about the same in an exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungama. In the previous part, we informed readers how he was the stunt double of Aamir in the risky cliff scene in Baazi (1995).
With Aamir Khan, he has worked in around 10 films. Aejaz Gulab added, “Yes and even with Salman, I have done several films like Veergati (1995), Judwaa (1997), Har Dil Jo Pyar Karega (2000), God Tussi Great Ho (2008), etc. I have been Salman’s body double several times.”
Aejaz Gulab was on the sets when Aamir Khan performed the legendary shot on the railway track in Ghulam (1998). Aejaz revealed, “Aamir actually performed that stunt. In those days, there was no CG. So, the scenes of him running in front of the train are real. But for just one profile shot, we used a green screen. However, the rest of the shots were real.”
Aejaz Gulab has worked in almost all films of Mohit Suri from Kalyug (2005), including the latter’s recently released blockbuster, Saiyaara (2025). He has also been a favourite of Ram Gopal Varma. Aejaz Gulab remarked, “The common factor between Aditya Dhar, Ram Gopal Varma and Mohit Suri is that they all gave me free hand. These people have given me a chance to freely showcase my creations. For instance, Mohit Suri would explain the scene to me in brief and ask me ‘Tu bata isme kya karna hai…fir apan dekhte hai kaise karna hai’. Once he liked my idea, he would add his directorial touch and then shoot the scene. I must have missed working on one or two of his film due to date issues. I will work on his next film as well. We met a few days ago and he gave me a narration.”
Interestingly, both Aejaz Gulab and Mohit Suri assisted on Awara Paagal Deewana (2002). He remarked, “Yes and before that, we worked together in Raaz (2002) as well. While I was assisting Hanif Abbas bhai, he was Vikram Bhatt’s assistant. That’s how our journey began. When you know someone since the days of AD, you form a long-lasting bond with that person. We are thick friends and there are times when creatively, we are not on the same page. But our bond is such that we can freely express our viewpoints to each other. Often, when I am working with a director for the first time and if I don’t approve of something he says, I might hesitate to share my mind with him. But with Mohit, Ramu ji and Aditya sir, that’s not the case. Aditya sir even told me, ‘If you feel something is wrong, please let me know’. All three allowed me to express my creation and then work around it. That’s why I have worked in so many films with them.”
