Two weeks ago, Bollywood Hungama exclusively spoke to David Dhawan on his birthday. The large-hearted filmmaker spoke from his heart about his birthday plans and journey as a director and also opened up on his upcoming project. He said, “For the last 5-6 months, I have been working on a script. I’ll take 4-5 months and start further work.” He added, “I am 70% through with my script. Casting will come later.”

Unlike his previous film Coolie No 1 (2020), will his next be an original film? David Dhawan replied, “Yes. That’s what I am trying to do.” Coolie No 1 starred his son Varun Dhawan and Sara Ali Khan in leading roles. It was the remake of his own 1995 comic caper of the same name, starring Govinda and Karisma Kapoor.

Moreover, David Dhawan assured that his next movie will have a theatrical release, which Coolie No 1 didn’t get. David Dhawan emphasized, “Coolie No 1 had to go on OTT because of the COVID situation. Otherwise, it was always meant for cinemas. Often, I am told that it would have done very well in theatres. But at that time, theatres were shut. We didn’t know when it would restart. And many other films also released on streaming platforms.” He continued, “Lekin theatre mein release karne waali baat hi alag hai. It benefits everybody in the chain.”

Bawaal, starring Varun Dhawan and produced by Sajid Nadiadwala, skipped a theatrical release and premiered on Amazon Prime last month. This writer and some other journalists saw it on the big screen in the press show and many of us felt lucky as it made for a fine big screen experience.

On this, David Dhawan said, “It was indeed cinematic. Ab pata nahin woh log kya sochke ghabra gaye. I don’t know. Everybody has the choice to release the film on the platform they feel is apt. But the director (Nitesh Tiwari) is very good. He writes very well. And see the performances of Varun and Janhvi Kapoor. Both have got so much applause.”
