Sonu Nigam is undoubtedly one of the most popular and successful playback singers to come from India. The singer who started his professional journey as a singer in the Hindi film industry in the earlier 90s has mesmerised us with his voice with sigs like ‘Kal Ho Na Ho’, ‘Yeh Dil Deewana’, ‘Sau Dard’, ‘Sandese Aate Hai’, ‘Abhi Mujh Mein Kahi’, and countless others. Honouring his contribution in the field of art, Sonu Nigam was honoured with the Padma Shri last month. In an interview with Bollywood Hungama recently, the singer spoke about the love he has been receiving from people and why he does not see the honour as a vindication.
While Sonu Nigam has never failed to mesmerise us with his voice, the artist has had his ups and downs in the industry and says that he is glad that whatever happened, happened. When asked if he looks at the Padma Shri honour as a vindication, Sonu said, “If I was the Sonu of before, I would have called it a vindication, but I am no more like that. My perspective towards life has changed. I think that whatever happened was right and it should have happened. All of that helped me mature and I also learnt from it. Popular sayings like 'Success is the best revenge’ is good to say but it in reality it is not a good thing. You have feelings of revenge or vindication when you have malice in your heart. Somehow I believe in that one and I feel that all of this is an illusion. If I am trying to defeat myself or being happy by defeating myself, then it won't be right. I don't look at the periphery of things.”
“If something good has happened then I see that my father is happy, my sister is happy. Every person calling me and messaging me is asking-'Yo hadn't received it (Padma Shri) till now? We thought you got it 20 years back. They said that they did not even know that I hadn't received it till now. I felt like most of India celebrated that yes, he should have received it. It felt good that people took it personally,” he added.
Today, Sonu feels he is a changed man and does not relate to emotions of revenge. “There were times when people who did not like what I said wanted to take revenge on me. You must have seen companies had banned me, and some had asked to get my songs removed or not give me a chance to sing. But this is their problem. They took revenge. But if even I think the same then what is the difference between them and me. I have to be a much better human being than them. My journey is to make myself a better soul, a better entity,” he said.
