2026 is a special year for Bejoy Nambiar. His creature thriller, Tu Yaa Main, starring Adarsh Gourav and Shanaya Kapoor, will arrive in cinemas on February 13. Then, June 10 will mark 15th anniversary of his debut directorial, Shaitan (2011). Starring Rajeev Khandelwal, Kalki Koechlin, Shiv Panditt, Neil Bhoopalam, Gulshan Devaiah and Kirti Kulhari with Rajkummar Rao in an extended special appearance, the action thriller is remembered for its songs, stylishly executed scenes and performances. One sequence that stood out in the second half featured the recreated version of the retro song ‘Khoya Khoya Chand’. It is played in the background scenes while madness unfolds on screen. It stunned the viewers and therefore, Shaitan remains a landmark film in Bejoy’s career.
Bollywood Hungama exclusively spoke to Bejoy Nambiar and asked him about the classic ‘Khoya Khoya Chand’ sequence. He said, “It was written into the script that the sequence needed contrast and chaos. At times, you plan something on paper and then it gets executed better than expected; this was one such instance. Also, the way cinematographer R Madhi shot it, A Sreekar Prasad sir edited it, Mikey McCleary composed the song and the actors performed – all of it just came together very nicely.”
He added, “I look back at it with a lot of fondness. I also remember what all happened at the shoot. We had a terrible accident on the sets of the film. Shiv Panditt fell from the first floor. So, I also remember all the trauma that we went through. Eventually, when people are talking about it even after 15 years, I am very grateful!”
Over the years, many movie buffs have drawn parallels with Shaitan and Anurag Kashyap’s unreleased film, Paanch, especially the plot. Bejoy clarified, “This was discussed even during the release. But I had not seen Paanch and I still haven’t. But since Anurag was backing the film and Paanch was unreleased, some comparisons were made. Honestly, we never took inspiration from Paanch.”
13 years after Shaitan, another film of the same name – Shaitaan (2024) – was released, starring Ajay Devgn, R Madhavan and Jyotika. When asked how he feels about it, Bejoy Nambiar confessed, “I haven’t seen it either. I had heard it’s a great film and that R Madhavan has done a fine job. But I was sad that mere film ke title ka dusra film aa gaya! That’s all (laughs).”
