EXCLUSIVE: Azeem Dayani, music supervisor at Dharma Productions, explains the mantra of making hit “remix” of old songs

en Bollywood News EXCLUSIVE: Azeem Dayani, music supervisor at Dharma Productions, explains the mantra of making hit “remix” of old songs

Azeem Dayani, who was involved in the remaking of Main Khiladi, shared his take on making remixes of old Bollywood songs.

Looking at the songs produced in the past few years, Bollywood is not new to remixing and rehashing old iconic tracks. In fact, it has become common practice to include at least one remixed song on every soundtrack during the last two or three years. While the internet is still debating on it, Bollywood Hungama spoke to Azeem Dayani, India’s first music supervisor, and asked him to shed some light on the matter. For the unversed, Dayani is currently working in the music department of Dharma Productions as a music supervisor.

In his response, Dayan asserted, “Speaking from my personal experience, I am someone who has worked on ‘Teri Mitti’ (an original track from Kesari) and a remix of ‘Ladki Aankh Maarey’ (a remix featured in Simmba). Both songs performed well. Given this, I feel, as long you credit the original people involved in the making of the original track and don’t hamper it too much to make it very different from what it was, I think there is nothing wrong with making remixes.

To explain his take further, Azeem added, “The most recent example is ‘Main Khiladi’ from Selfiee. The idea was because it’s an Akshay Kumar song that is coming back and he is playing the role of a superstar in the film and doing his own song. If you see, the original composer Anu Malik and singer Udit Narayan, the lyricist of the original song have passed away, but they were involved in the remix as well. So this, the entire package of the original creators and they are promoting the remix, there is no better feeling than this.”

He concluded the conversation by saying, “If you notice on social media, it is quite evident that we have brought the original song back in the best way possible. The song has managed to grab the attention of those also who didn’t hear the original track.”
