Anand Gandhi became a man to watch out for thanks to his film Ship Of Theseus (2013). It was followed by the cult classic Tumbbad (2018), which credited Anand as executive producer and creative director. The film underperformed during its original release, but when it was re-released last year, it became the second biggest re-release grosser. In an exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungama, Anand spoke about this horror flick.
In July this year, Anand Gandhi made a stunning claim, stating that he was the director of Tumbbad. How did Rahi Anil Barve, credited as the director of the film and lead actor and producer Sohum Shah react to this interview and did they reach out to him?
Anand Gandhi said, “I understand that it sounded ‘stunning’ in a headline, but from my point of view, I was simply stating my role in a long, well-documented creative process. Over the years, I had largely stayed silent about it, and I finally felt it was important to speak about my contribution to the film people actually saw.”
He added, “Everyone involved has their own relationship to the film and to its history. I don’t want to speak on behalf of Rahi or Sohum, and I don’t wish to discuss private conversations. My consistent wish is for truthful credit on all sides, and for everyone to be able to move forward with dignity.”
The success of Tumbbad’s re-release led makers to announce Tumbbad 2. When asked about his thoughts for the sequel, Anand Gandhi said, “None of my original creative collaborators, and I, are involved with Tumbbad 2. For that reason, it’s difficult for me to emotionally see it as a direct continuation of the film we made together.”
He continued, “What I do feel strongly about is the connection the first film has with its audience. People have a very personal relationship with Tumbbad and with what it meant for Indian cinema. My hope is that whatever form Tumbbad 2 takes, it honours that relationship and respects the sentiments of the fan community.”
