The emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic saw the emergence or boom of OTT content. With no censoring process required, a lot of web shows generously use cuss words or abuses in the dialogues. This has led to a debate since recent years on whether there should be any regulation on the web. It seems that the audience and the entertainment industry stand divided on this. Abhishek Banerjee, who has made a name for himself in quite a few shows and films, is clearly of the opinion that cuss words are not a problem.
In an exclusive chat with Bollywood Hungama, Banerjee said, “In India, we have a diverse audience. We like to see Hollywood films where they cuss a lot. We like to glorify those films, especially of Tarantino. There are so many Tarantino lovers in the industry and the audience. It’s all about bloodshed and cuss words. This is not just in Tarantino’s films. I am just talking about Tarantino as he is a widely spread filmmaker in our country.”
He added, “So, we are used to hearing English cuss words in films. But the minute the Hindi cuss words come in, we feel, oh this is not (good). It’ still new, so it’s shocking the audience. But I think with time, people will get used to it because cuss words are very, very, very normal and common on Indian streets and everywhere we go.”
The actor said that he hasn’t come across anyone who doesn’t abuse. “I don’t think I have really known anybody who doesn’t abuse (laughs) or probably I am in the wrong company; maybe it’s my fault. I am sorry about that. But I don’t really see cuss words as a problem because it’s a part of our vocabulary and street language. When people get angry, they abuse. People abuse when they are having fun with their friends. Sometimes our parents use cuss words on us. So, it’s normal. In every society, people use those words,” he said.
While citing an example of how people generously use cuss words, Banerjee pointed out to the comments on social media. “People should just increase their threshold to enjoy shows and movies the way they are and not really get affected so much,” he said. “If those who do not abuse, if they are saying it, probably I understand. But I know even when we are protesting against cuss words, the trollers are using cuss words. Just see the kind of comments on Instagram. You will realize that we are a nation who loves cuss words. So, why shy away from it?”
Banerjee signed off saying that using such words is necessary to add realism and people always have the option of not watching a certain type of content. “If you are talking about making situations appear real, we need to also make them feel real,” he said. “And if you really don’t like cuss words, don’t watch such shows and films with cuss words. I think it will make your life easy and make our life easy too. We are not making things for everyone. Sometimes, you are doing it because you have your own vision. So, if somebody really doesn’t agree with our vision, they have the opportunity to change the channel or show. It's as simple as that.”
Banerjee was last seen in the comic caper Dream Girl 2 along with Ayushmann Khurrana and Paresh Rawal. His upcoming film Stolen recently had its premiere at the Venice Film Festival.
