Director Anushree Mehta reminisced about her childhood fondness for cinema, recounting cherished memories of watching films with her extended family. From timeless classics like Amar Akbar Anthony to the iconic Mr. India and the heartwarming Chupke Chupke, Mehta's love for cinema blossomed from an early age. It was this deep-rooted passion for storytelling that led her to embark on the journey of directing the much-anticipated remake of Hrishikesh Mukherjee's beloved classic, Bawarchi.

In a recent interview with the Indian Express, Anushree not only shared insights into the casting process, acknowledging the challenges of filling the shoes of the iconic characters portrayed by Rajesh Khanna and Jaya Bachchan. Having spent over six months crafting the script, Mehta is currently finalising the third draft of the screenplay and is poised to commence filming later this year.

For the unversed, originally released in 1972, Bawarchi charmed audiences with its heartwarming narrative and stellar performances by actors Rajesh Khanna, Jaya Bachchan, and Asrani. The film, a remake of the 1966 Bengali classic Galpo Holeo Satti, has long been celebrated for its endearing portrayal of family dynamics and timeless humour.

When asked about the qualities she seeks in actors for these pivotal roles, Mehta spoke about the importance of capturing the essence of the original performances, stating, "They need to have magic. Rajesh Khanna sir is still so iconic, so I would need magic."

Earlier, while announcing the film, Anushree had said, “Since Bawarchi itself was a remake of a Bengali film, Hrishida in his time recreated it and made it relatable to that era. My attempt is going to be with a similar intention, to retell the classic story of Bawarchi in a way that family audiences of all age groups can watch and enjoy the movie together. I'm aiming to create a wholesome, unforgettable family experience," in a press note.
