It is hard to believe that Hindi cinema’s original he-man Dharmendra is 88. “Mujhe bhi vishwas nahin hota, jab tak aapne mujhe yaad nahin dilaya (even I didn’t believe it until you reminded me of my age),” laughed the wonderfully affable Dharmendra.

He sighed, “The time has just flown by. It seems just the other day when I was this starry-eyed boy from a village in Ludhiana in Mumbai. I have to confess I didn’t have to struggle much to get my first role. Within no time I was facing the camera for my dear friend Arjun Hingorani’s Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere, with no experience in acting. I didn’t know where to look when the camera was on.”

That was because Dharamji was a natural-born and the embodiment of male beauty. He laughed at the compliment and said, “Yeh to aapke nazariye ka kamaal hai. Varna main kaun si cheez hoon. After more than sixty years, I still get so much love from the people of this country! I must have done something right in my last life.”

Why last life, in this life itself Dharamji has given only love to all. “Thank you, Subhash. Thank you. The truth is, I feel I have been sent to this earth to spread love. I feel, in one’s life you get as good as you give. I hope to continue to get my country’s love. I also hope to do some good work in the coming year,” says Dharamji emotionally.

2023 brought the actor a heap of hosannas for Karan Johar’s Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani. “That was an experience I cherish,” he said. “So much love from everyone. In the past there were many memorable roles. I hope to get more such films. At my age the roles are hard to come by, unless filmmakers write something specially for me, which isn’t likely in our country.”
