As the highly anticipated sequel Border 2 nears its theatrical release, a creative rift has emerged between its makers and the legendary lyricist of the original film, Javed Akhtar. The veteran poet recently revealed he declined an offer to work on the sequel, sparking a significant conversation about originality in Bollywood.
Javed Akhtar, who penned the iconic soundtrack for the 1997 blockbuster Border, made headlines by describing the industry’s reliance on remakes as a sign of decline. Explaining his decision to distance himself from the sequel, Akhtar stated, “They did ask me to write for the film, but I refused. I really feel this is a kind of intellectual and creative bankruptcy. You have an old song that did well and you want to put it out again by adding something? Make new songs or else accept that you cannot do the same level of work,” during a conversation with India Today.
In response to the "creative bankruptcy" critique, the producers of Border 2 have defended their musical choices, particularly the decision to rework the legendary track ‘Sandese Aate Hain’. Bhushan Kumar said at a Border 2 event, “I believe this film could not have been made without two things. In fact, three things. One, the title Border; second, Sunny, sir; and third, ‘Sandese Aate Hain.’ So it was always in our minds that we had to keep ‘Sandese Aate Hain’.”

He further explained, “The lyrics of ‘Sandese’ have been changed according to the situation. The story we are showing now is not a recreation of the first Border, but different stories linked to the 1971 war. We have portrayed the stories of other soldiers. The lyrics have been written based on their lives. That's why we got these lyrics written by Manoj (Muntashir) ji.”

Directed by Anurag Singh and starring Sunny Deol, Varun Dhawan, and Diljit Dosanjh, Border 2 is scheduled to hit theatres on January 23, 2026. Whether the reworked soundtrack will resonate with a new generation as the original did in 1997 remains to be seen.
