Producer and co-writer Nidhi Dutta has shed light on the reasoning behind naming the upcoming war film Border 2, stressing that the decision was rooted in historical context rather than franchise value. According to Dutta, the title reflects an extension of the 1971 Indo-Pak war narrative, which she feels has long been viewed through a limited lens.

Speaking about the impact of the original Border, Dutta noted that while the film remains iconic, it also shaped public perception of the war in a very specific way. “Previous Border in some way has given us an impression that the 1971 war equals Longewala and it ends there. Somewhere we have an impression that itna hi hua tha, isse jyada toh hua hi nahi tha (only this had happened. Nothing beyond it),” she told News18. She added that this narrowed understanding needed to be addressed, given the scale of the conflict. “It was important, and it was like a responsibility to say no, guys, it was not just this — it was so much more.”
Clarifying that Border 2 is not a conventional sequel or a standalone war film, Dutta explained that the project was always meant to remain within the same historical timeline. “That is why it was called Border 2, because it was an extension of that first film and not just a franchise element. It was not something where I made a film called Border 2 on the Kargil war — that was 1999 and this was 1971,” she said. According to her, the logic was simple: the film presents different battles from the same war.
Dutta further pointed out that the narrative actively connects events from both films. Referring to a scene involving the character Hoshiyar Singh, she said that moments where he hears about the deaths of Bhairav Singh and Dharamveer on the radio underline that the events of Border and Border 2 are unfolding at the same time. “You realise that it’s happening at the same time, in the same days, which is why it is called Border 2 — it’s an extension of Border,” she explained.
Acknowledging the expectations attached to the title, Dutta admitted that revisiting Border comes with significant pressure. “It’s not so much cushioning of the franchise; it’s as much, or if not a bigger, responsibility because you are dealing with emotions. You are taking a chance by even calling it Border 2,” she said.
For Dutta, the driving force remains intent. Emphasising continuity with the vision of her father, she concluded, “There has to be an intention of why you are making a film. My intention had to be the same as my father’s, and if that intention is correct, I don’t think we can go wrong. There will be acceptance from the audience, and you will get the success we have.”
