“I felt finished, didn’t know how to recover from it.” With these stark words, actor Bhumi Pednekar has spoken about the emotional toll of what is widely regarded as one of the biggest box-office disasters in Indian cinema , The Lady Killer.

The 2023 thriller, which also starred Arjun Kapoor, was reportedly made on a budget of Rs 45 crore but went on to earn less than Rs 1 lakh during its theatrical run. Trade reports at the time claimed that the film sold just 293 tickets nationwide on its opening day, an unprecedented low for a mainstream Hindi release. For Pednekar, however, the numbers only tell part of the story.
In a recent interaction with Mid-Day , Bhumi revealed that the film’s troubled fate began long before it reached cinemas. “Nearly 35% of the film was never shot,” she said, explaining that production hurdles left the project incomplete. Despite these setbacks, the film was eventually released in theatres in a compromised form. “When you pour your time and energy into something, and then it releases in a way you never imagined, it is heartbreaking,” she admitted. “I felt finished, didn’t know how to recover from it.”
She described the episode as one of the lowest phases of her career, marked by intense self-doubt and public scrutiny. The trolling that followed the film’s dismal box office performance made it harder. “You question your choices. You question yourself,” she said, adding that the scale of the backlash was difficult to process.
Ironically, the film’s catastrophic performance later sparked widespread curiosity. After its theatrical run collapsed, The Lady Killer was made available for free on YouTube. Viewers, intrigued by headlines labelling it “India’s biggest flop,” watched it in large numbers, pushing its view count past 5 million. The digital traction stood in sharp contrast to its theatrical fate.
Reflecting on the experience, Bhumi said the setback forced her to reassess how she looks at success and failure. “In our industry, Fridays can change everything. But they can’t define you,” she said. “It was heartbreaking. But it also taught me strength I didn’t know I had.”
