Actor Bhumi Satish Pednekkar addressed climate advocacy, eco-conscious lifestyle choices, and sustainable filmmaking practices during a recent NDTV panel discussion. The actor highlighted the importance of integrating green narratives into mainstream cinema to promote environmental awareness among mass audiences.
Reflecting on her long-standing commitment to the environment, Pednekkar shared that her awareness began during her childhood. She stated, “Since childhood, I have had a realisation to work towards a better climate. In schools, we've all learned about climate change, and we all know it is a reality and not a scientific fiction novel.”
The actor also recalled dealing with severe environmental concerns during her youth. She explained, “I would suffer from climate anxiety and would not be able to sleep at night. Now we speak frankly about mental health, but back then, I hadn't realised I was suffering from something called climate anxiety.”
Following her entry into the film industry, Bhumi Satish Pednekkar focused on establishing a community aligned with her personal values to advocate for environmental causes. She stated, “After I became an actor, I built my own community who added weight to my beliefs and values. I started as a Climate Warrior and worked really hard on it - it is a very powerful platform.”
The actor also explained her methods for integrating ecological awareness directly into her chosen cinematic projects. She said, “My efforts have always been to bring a climate-positive narrative even in the films that I do.”
Pednekkar noted that routine individual choices collectively contribute to meaningful environmental change. She stated, “Even small steps matter, one could plant saplings at every happy occasion - birthdays, weddings, festivals, etc. There could be no bigger service than this.”
Pednekkar emphasized using her public reach to advance ecological causes and model sustainable behaviors. She noted, “When it comes to films, if we can show that an actor is driving a sports car, why can't we show that the actor can also drive an EV? Heroes and heroines are idolised in our country. It is through them that we can spread more awareness about sustainability, whether fashion, technology or anything else.”
As she gears up to advocate for broader industry reforms, she emphasized the necessity of minimizing waste during production. She concluded, “As actors and filmmakers, what we can work on is how to make our sets more sustainable, how to refuse the use of plastic on sets, how can we recycle more.”
