Actor Bhagyashree has weighed in on the growing use of intimate scenes in contemporary films, saying that bold storytelling does not have to come at the cost of audience comfort.
Speaking recently with Variety India about changing cinematic trends, the actor shared that while society and storytelling styles have evolved, certain portrayals feel excessive. “It’s not necessary to show intimacy that makes you squirm while sitting with your parents or children,” she said, adding that emotional depth should not rely solely on physical display. Bhagyashree, who became a household name with Maine Pyar Kiya, reflected on how films in the 1990s were largely designed as family experiences. According to her, cinema halls once brought generations together, something she feels is harder to imagine with some of today’s content choices.
Clarifying that she is not against progress, the actor noted that modern stories can and should explore diverse themes. However, she believes intimacy must serve the narrative. “You can be bold, diverse and interesting without being defiant to society,” she remarked, underlining that storytelling should not alienate viewers unnecessarily. Her comments arrive amid ongoing conversations about creative freedom and censorship in the industry. As streaming platforms and theatrical releases continue to push boundaries, debates around artistic liberty versus cultural sensitivity remain active.
Bhagyashree also spoke about the broader evolution of the industry, particularly for women. She acknowledged that earlier decades were shaped by patriarchal norms that often limited opportunities after marriage. Today, she sees a shift in mindset, with greater acceptance of women balancing personal and professional lives.
