Jio Studios has quietly but decisively evolved into a formidable creative powerhouse, achieving dominance by doing what few competitors dare: backing the unconventional. At the core of their strategy is a singular conviction that great box office outcomes begin with distinctive concepts. While the industry often retreats to “safe” bets, Jio Studios pursues stories that challenge the status quo.
This philosophy first gained momentum with their debut release, Stree (2018). Horror-comedy as a genre was largely non-existent in Indian cinema, however, Jio Studios recognized its potential for mass resonance. The gamble didn’t just pay off; it pioneered a movement. By the time Stree 2 arrived in 2024, it shattered glass ceilings to become the first Hindi film to cross Rs. 600 crores (India net), officially cementing the horror-comedy genre as a premier commercial force.
The studio’s most audacious move, however, came with Dhurandhar in 2025. It was the kind of project many considered too complex or simply too uncertain. While most spy films in India leaned on spectacle, high drama, and a certain gloss factor, Dhurandhar chose a more rooted and grungier path. But where others saw doubt, Jyoti Deshpande of Jio Studios saw opportunity. Instead of stepping back, the studio leaned in recognising the chance to build a new cinematic space.
The result was a cultural phenomenon with Dhurandhar dismantled existing box office records and now with Dhurandhar The Revenge snowballing to be a box office tsunami globally, securing the highest opening-day collection in the history of Indian cinema.
Sharing his thoughts on Jio Studios’ monumental success in last three years, veteran trade analyst Taran Adarsh said, “All these films are not normal hits. They are blockbuster, historic hits. Look at the numbers of Stree 2, you'll be shocked. So, for Dhurandhar, the first part, and now Dhurandhar 2, I think it's history in the making right now. And I keep telling this that Jyoti Deshpande, Aditya Dhar and Lokesh Dhar are all real life Dhurandhars. The conviction of Jio Studios to back Dhurandhar 1 and Dhurandhar 2 deserves the highest praise. A lot of times a studio person would think twice. But Jyoti Deshpande went by her instinct, conviction and judgement. And see how is paid off in a very big way! The most courageous producer today, actually. Today Jio Studios stands the tallest in the film industry. These films are jewels that shine in your filmography.”
Coming to Dhurandhar franchise, Adarsh said that making a film in two parts could be a gamble. “What if it does not work? What would happen then? But see the way it worked. I think this is the most loved film of our recent times. If you ask me, the craze for this film is as strong as what Sholay was in that era. I've seen that with my own eyes. I used to go to Minerva Theatre. It was playing in 70mm in those days. It was right next to my office in Grant Road. I was barely 10 years old, but accompanying my father to the office and then going to the theatre to watch the film. I have seen it so many times that I have lost count. That was the craze for that film. And I see that happening again,” he said.
Going by the early box office trends and response to Dhurandhar The Revenge, it seems like it will also end on a huge number. Sharing his reaction on the film, Adarsh said, “I was anxiously waiting for it. I was counting the days till 18th March and I would be able to watch it. When I came out of the theatre, I was literally clapping. I was jumping with joy. Sometimes, your expression says it all. These are my words, ‘What a film! So brilliant!’ I told Aditya Dhar, ‘You are a magician’.”
Highlighting the studio’s success, veteran trade analyst Atul Mohan said, “It’s remarkable. It is a young studio, if you compare it with other studios. The driving force maybe experienced but the company is new. For a new company, to create such box office records is remarkable. Like, Stree 2 and Dhurandhar 1. We have also seen a lot of other successful films from Jio Studios, be it Singham Again or their collaboration with Maddock Films, which has given blockbuster films. This shows that the intent is good. If the cinema turns out to be good, the collections will surely come.”
The thread connecting these successes is a clear pattern of calculated audacity. By identifying unique storylines where the perceived risk is high, Jio Studios has transitioned from following trends to actively manufacturing them.
Decoding Jio Studio’s successful streak, exhibitor and distributor Akshaye Rathi pointed out that apart from big ticket franchises like Dhurandhar and Stree, the studio has also backed smaller scale subjects despite its share of hits and misses. “Whether it's Jio Studios or any other studio, there will always be a scenario where there will be some hits and some misses. So, it is the feature of the business. And it's just good to see that Jio Studios has these huge successes. What's beautiful is that it's the same studio that was behind Laapataa Ladies as well as a movie like Dhurandhar. And that is what showcases the spectrum of content that they are willing to back in and put their muscles behind.”
Adarsh also appreciates how the studio is willingly backing subjects like Laapataa Ladies too. “It is not that you're only going ahead with Stree 2, and Dhurandhar 1 and 2. You're doing different cinema also. You're backing different stories also, which are not the usual commercial in the masala space. I've known Jyoti for quite some time. And I think she's one of the finest producers I've had the fortune of meeting.”
Atul Mohan echoed the same sentiment about the studio willing to back varied subjects. “They are not backing traditional templates like other studios like romcoms or action. Instead, they are backing films with different subjects. Did anyone think that a horror comedy movie can do such big business? They showed it through Stree and Stree 2 that this can be achieved. They proved with Dhurandhar how a spy franchise can become such a sensation. They have a variety of subjects,” he said.
Mohan also highlighted that Jio Studios doesn’t follow the template of other banners that continue to concentrate only on one franchise if they achieve success in it. “If a film does well, other studios keep making films under its franchise one after the other,” he said. “We have seen how Dharma Productions has been busy with romcoms after their films in that genre did well. When a few spy universe movies from Yash Raj Films did well, we were only getting spy films from their stable, be it War, Tiger or Pathaan. But that is not the case with Jio Studios. They are trying multiple things and they are being successful also. It is very commendable that a new studio has achieved this.”
Adarsh also believes that the studio will continue to give successful films in the coming times. He specifically highlighted Riteish Deshmukh’s Raja Shivaji, whose teaser has been attached with Dhurandhar The Revenge. “I spoke to Riteish also. I'm very hopeful for Raja Shivaji. Don't be surprised that there'll be more and more blockbusters coming in (from Jio). I'm very hopeful. It's so important for the health of the industry to deliver those numbers.”
In an industry often paralyzed by caution, Jio Studios stands out as a conviction-driven entity. They haven't just delivered hits; they have fundamentally expanded the boundaries of what Hindi cinema can imagine, execute, and achieve.
