American singer-songwriter Beyoncé opened the 2022 Academy Awards from a tennis court in Compton in honor of the birthplace of tennis legends Venus and Serena Williams, whose upbringing is the subject of film King Richard. The global artist opened the show with an ace performance on ‘Be Alive,’ her Oscar-nominated track from the biographical drama.
Tennis stars Venus and Serena Williams introduced the performance by paying tribute to the city of Compton, where they grew up and first began playing tennis. The music superstar made the streets of Compton her stage, riding in on a horse flanked by performers all wearing tennis-ball green. Clad in a feathery lime gown and jewels, the songstress strolled to an all-green set and performed the ballad.
Beyoncé sang the stirring track she wrote with Dixson for the Best Picture nominee starring Will Smith. The actor previously told Entertainment Weekly “The marriage of a movie and a song is a kind of magic that's unmatched in entertainment,” when talking about the track. "I was so happy when Beyoncé called," he added. She was joined by a large ensemble of musicians and dancers, including her Grammy-winning daughter Blue Ivy Carter, who made her Oscars debut.
King Richard was nominated for five awards at this year’s ceremony, including Best Original Screenplay, Best Picture and Best Actor for Will Smith. For his performance, Smith ultimately won the Academy Award and other accolades including Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild Award.
