Filmmaker Bejoy Nambiar says he remains grateful for the opportunity to continue telling stories on screen, even though his career has not been defined by major box office blockbusters. The director recently reflected on the realities of filmmaking and the challenges that have shaped his journey in an interview with Press Trust of India.
Best known for films such as Shaitan, David and Wazir, Nambiar acknowledged that the process of making films has consistently come with hurdles. He said, “While making my first and second film, I felt why is it getting difficult with every film? I’ve accepted that now. It’s part and parcel of my filmmaking career that every film is going to be a challenge, from its making to putting it out there. I feel grateful that I’m still getting an opportunity to make films despite the fact that I’ve not given like a blockbuster commercial success,” Nambiar told PTI in an interview.
The director’s latest release, Tu Yaa Main, is a survival thriller starring Adarsh Gourav and Shanaya Kapoor. The film follows two social media influencers whose romantic getaway turns into a fight for survival after they become trapped in a swimming pool with a crocodile. While the film received encouraging reviews, Nambiar admitted that its theatrical performance did not meet expectations.
Speaking about the response to the film, he said, “I want my work to get more respect and love. As long as my producer is recovering his money, I’m good. Anything else is a bonus, but the love and respect is quite important.”
He also expressed appreciation for the reception the film has received from audiences and critics, even as he remained candid about its commercial outcome. “I’m very happy with the love that it’s got. The commercial part is quite disappointing, I’m hoping that my producers are not too much in the red,” Nambiar said, adding that he expects the film to find a wider audience after its digital release.
Tu Yaa Main is scheduled to begin streaming on Netflix from April 10, 2026, where the filmmaker hopes it will continue to connect with viewers beyond its theatrical run.
