Avinash Tiwary has opened up about his experience of working with Imtiaz Ali, crediting the director for reshaping his understanding of performance, particularly around ideas of physicality and emotional depth. The actor is set to collaborate with Ali again in O Saathi Re, a romantic drama that explores love and relationships in a contemporary setting.
Reflecting on their creative partnership in a recent interview with PTI, Tiwary said Ali first influenced his perspective during Laila Majnu. “He made me go beyond the idea of the physical self with Laila Majnu. After that, in my head, the importance of physical beauty became almost redundant,” he said, explaining how the shift impacted his approach to acting. He believes the same philosophy carries into O Saathi Re. “It continues here as well. When you let go of the physical, you start understanding what’s really going on inside, and that’s what he manages to bring out,” Tiwary added.
The upcoming series, also starring Aditi Rao Hydari and Arjun Rampal, is described as an exploration of love, relationships, and emotional complexities. According to Tiwary, Ali’s direction stands out for its ability to uncover layers within actors that they may not be consciously aware of. “He brings out things that are buried deep inside you, things you don’t even know about yourself,” he said, adding that this process has pushed him beyond conventional ideas of performance.
At the same time, the actor admitted that working on the project came with its challenges. “Every time ‘action’ was called, there was a part of me that wanted to run away. Holding on to the character was difficult,” he said, while adding that collaborating with experienced creators helped him stay grounded. “I don’t have to overthink, I just have to give my 100 per cent.”
Tiwary also reflected on his recent film O Romeo, directed by Vishal Bhardwaj. While he described the project as an important milestone, he acknowledged that he had hoped for a stronger audience response. “It took a lot from me, and I wish more people had connected with it,” he said, adding that he hopes to collaborate with Bhardwaj again in the future.
The actor will next be seen in Ginny Weds Sunny 2, which is scheduled to release in theatres on April 24.
