Ashutosh Gowariker has spoken about the importance of female filmmakers and the need for more women-led voices in cinema while discussing his experience of working on System, the recently released courtroom thriller starring Sonakshi Sinha and Jyotika.
The film, currently streaming on Prime Video, explores themes of justice, privilege, and institutional power through the journeys of two women navigating a system designed to protect the influential. Set against the backdrop of a tense courtroom drama, the narrative follows Neha Rajvansh, a public prosecutor played by Sonakshi Sinha, and Sarika Rawat, a courtroom stenographer portrayed by Jyotika, whose lives intersect during a high-stakes legal battle.
Reflecting on working with creator and director Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari, Ashutosh Gowariker shared his thoughts on why women filmmakers bring a distinct perspective to storytelling. “I feel that the number of female directors in the industry is still not where it should be. It is very important for that number to grow, and it is growing. Women need to get more opportunities to express their stories, because only then will they get the chance to prove themselves,” he said.
The filmmaker further highlighted how storytelling changes when viewed through a female lens. “I think that is a wonderful thing, because the female gaze brings a very different way of looking at a situation. No matter how much men say we know everything, we don’t. Women actually understand more,” Ashutosh added. He also praised the female directors he has collaborated with over the years, saying, “So, I truly believe that the female gaze, especially in direction, is extremely important, and all the female directors I have worked with are outstanding.”
Created and directed by Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari, System has been receiving positive responses for its courtroom drama format, layered performances, and social themes. The film has especially drawn attention for placing two women at the centre of a narrative dealing with truth, justice, and power structures.
The project has been produced by Pammi Baweja, Harman Baweja, and Smitha Baliga under the banner of Baweja Studios. The film is currently streaming on Prime Video across India and more than 240 countries and territories worldwide.
