The passing of legendary playback singer Asha Bhosle at the age of 92 has drawn tributes from political leaders across the country, many of whom remembered her as one of the defining voices of India’s cultural legacy.

The President of India, Droupadi Murmu, said Asha Bhosle’s passing had created a huge void in the world of music and described her as an iconic singer whose career defined an era in Indian music. She also recalled her personal interactions with the singer and said her timeless voice enriched Indian music for decades.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he was deeply saddened by her demise and described her as one of India’s most renowned and versatile voices. He noted that her musical journey spanning decades enriched India’s cultural heritage and touched listeners across the world. The Prime Minister also said he would always cherish his conversations with her and extended condolences to her family, admirers and music lovers.

CM of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee, called Asha Bhosle a great musical genius whose voice ruled hearts for generations. She also recalled that the singer remained immensely popular in West Bengal and noted that she had been conferred the state’s highest civilian honour, the Bangabibhushan, in 2018.

Leader of Opposition, Rahul Gandhi, described the news of her passing as heartbreaking and said that through her voice and art, she would remain immortal among listeners. He expressed condolences to her loved ones and admirers.

Former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal paid tribute to the Padma Vibhushan awardee, calling her passing an irreplaceable loss for the country and saying she would remain immortal through her countless songs.

Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis described her demise as extremely heartbreaking and said another star from the Mangeshkar lineage had been lost after Lata Mangeshkar. He reflected on her versatility across devotional music, ghazals, classical compositions, folk songs and popular film tracks, and remembered a recent public interaction where she had encouraged him to sing one of her songs during an event.

Andhra Pradesh CM N. Chandrababu Naidu said her extraordinary contributions to music over seven decades enriched generations of listeners. He added that her legacy would remain an integral part of India’s musical heritage and continue to resonate across the world.

Shashi Tharoor also paid tribute, describing her voice as one that defined generations of Indian music and noting that few artists matched her versatility and longevity.

Asha Bhosle’s passing has prompted tributes from leaders across political parties and regions, reflecting the wide national impact of a career that shaped Indian music for more than seven decades.
