Movie buffs across the world were saddened on the afternoon of April 12 as news broke that legendary singer Asha Bhosle had passed away. Born on September 8, 1933, she began singing in 1943 and thus had an 83-year-long illustrious career. Her life, in short, had all the ingredients of a compelling biopic. In one of her interviews, when asked which actress could portray her on screen, Asha Bhosle gave an interesting answer.
In December 2018, in an interview with Bombay Times, she was asked which actress could play her on screen. Asha Bhosle had replied, “I think Priyanka Chopra Jonas would be perfect to play me onscreen. Kangana Ranaut is also a very good actor. I feel she can be a great choice, too.” But she also added, “Having said this, I don’t think a film based on my life will ever be made (laughs!).”
Incidentally, Kangana Ranaut has an Asha Bhosle connection. Her acclaimed 2014 film Queen featured the recreation of the song ‘Hungama Ho Gaya’, which was sung by Asha Bhosle in Anhonee (1973). The song ‘Kaafi Nahi Chaand’ in Kangana’s other 2014 film, Revolver Rani (2014), was sung by Asha Bhosle.
Meanwhile, nearly 9 years ago, Asha Bhosle made a surprising confession about the sacrifice and discipline that shaped her journey to the top. She revealed that she had not eaten pani puri or ice cream since the age of 13.
In an article published by DNA, Asha Bhosle revealed this fact at the Leadership Lecture Series held in Dubai. She stated, "Music was always important to me, but in 1947, when I started singing for Hindi movies, was when I realized that this is my work, this is my life. Earlier, before marriage, I used to think, ‘I won’t sing, I will eat ice-cream’, but it was God’s wish that he gave me singing as a gift and till now I am singing. I used to think at times that after singing, ‘I will have lots of ice cream, imli or pani puri’, but to date, I haven’t eaten either. They are bad for my throat, so after I left them at the age of 13, I haven’t had them."
