Singer Armaan Malik is revisiting a key milestone in his career as his English single ‘Control’ completes six years. The track, which marked his debut in the global pop space, continues to hold strong emotional and artistic significance for the singer.
Looking back at the release, Armaan described the moment as both exciting and nerve-wracking, especially as it marked his first step into a relatively unexplored space for Indian artists at the time. “It was truly a defining moment for me. It was my debut English single, and I still remember how nervous yet excited I felt putting it out into the world,” he shares.
The singer also acknowledged the broader impact the song had, not just on his own journey but within the music landscape. “It feels like a turning point not just for me, but in a small way for Indian artists as well. It broke a certain perception that we’re only tied to film-music. It showed that we can exist in the global pop space too, in our own voice.”
Recalling the phase when ‘Control’ was created, Armaan noted how the experience stood apart from his work in films. “Everything felt new. It was the first time I was putting out music that was just me, no character, no film, just my own story,” he says.
Over the years, the singer believes his approach to music has evolved significantly, with a stronger sense of identity guiding his creative decisions. “Back then, I was just exploring and following instinct. Now I feel a lot more aware of who I am as an artist. I don’t feel the need to chase a sound anymore. I’d rather create something that feels true to me.”
He further emphasised how his songwriting has become more personal with time. “I’m not afraid to be vulnerable or to leave things a little imperfect if that’s what the song needs,” Armaan explains. For the artist, ‘Control’ marked a shift in how he viewed his own career trajectory. “It gave me an identity of my own. It was the beginning of me stepping out as an artist beyond playback singing,” he says.
Calling it a stepping stone towards his global ambitions, Armaan concluded, “It gave me the belief that I could carve out my own space and not be limited by where I come from or what people expect from me. Even today, it reminds me of that hunger and clarity.”
