Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap has said that the term "pan-India" is a business gimmick that is being used to make money, rather than a creative push to make better cinema. In an interview with Zoom, Kashyap said that the term was coined purely for business purposes and that only a limited number of people are benefiting from it.
"I have said something that I feel. In time, either people will see what I was trying to say or I will see that I was wrong," he said. "I have seen examples. Each pan-India film that has worked, never set out to be pan-India. When KGF one was out, it wasn't called a pan-India film. It was dubbed in Hindi and released by Excel Entertainment. Baahubali wasn't called that either, it was dubbed and released. The Pan-India term was created for the sake of business, not for cinema."
Kashyap also said that the term is misleading, as it gives the impression that a film is being made for a wider audience when in reality it is only being made for a specific region or language.
"Who is benefiting from it? Very few people. By saying pan-India they are getting higher budgets, some people are getting higher salaries, but the cost that is going into the film...Pan-India becomes enough for them to say it is a 'big shot' film, without any central core of the story," he said.
Kashyap's comments come at a time when the Indian film industry is increasingly looking to make pan-India films that can appeal to audiences across the country. However, Kashyap's warning suggests that the term may be more about marketing than about making better films.
