Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap has said he has no plans to make a third installment of his acclaimed gangster saga Gangs of Wasseypur, despite persistent fan demand, calling the franchise an “albatross” around his neck.

In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter India, Kashyap said that regardless of his extensive body of work since the 2012 two-part film, audiences continue to identify him primarily with Wasseypur. “They all know me as either an actor or the director of Gangs of Wasseypur. And I have a filmography of 200 plus. They remember nothing else. And the only question they ask me, ‘3 kab bana rahe ho sir?’” he said.
The director made it clear that he would not give in to expectations of a threequel. “I didn’t make films to compete in this market of who’s the most successful filmmaker. I came here to make films, and I will make films. I’m ready to bear the consequences. I’ll go back to my indie days,” he added.
Kashyap also attributed the underwhelming box office performance of his recent two-part crime comedy Nishaanchi to what he described as the “shadow of Gangs of Wasseypur.” According to him, Nishaanchi was originally conceived as a streaming-only release for Prime Video India. However, given the enduring popularity of Wasseypur, the decision was made to split the film into two parts and release the first in cinemas.
That strategy, he suggested, did not work in the film’s favour. Many viewers were reportedly taken aback by the abrupt ending of the first part, which failed to collect even Rs 2 crore at the domestic box office. Kashyap said that those who appreciated Nishaanchi preferred watching it in one go, either during trial screenings or later on streaming when both parts were released simultaneously.
The filmmaker further noted that he could have simplified Nishaanchi by adding a guiding voiceover, as he did in Gangs of Wasseypur, but chose not to repeat himself creatively. “I thought that the history of Bihar wasn’t known that much back then, but Uttar Pradesh is still a familiar territory today. Nishaanchi is set in Kanpur, which is a metro city,” he said.
Since Gangs of Wasseypur, which starred actors including Manoj Bajpayee, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Richa Chadha and Huma Qureshi, Kashyap has directed multiple feature films and short projects, in addition to acting in several productions.
Currently, the filmmaker is busy with the promotions of his upcoming film, Kennedy, ahead of its OTT release.
