Veteran playback singer Alka Yagnik has shared an update on her health, revealing that she continues to struggle with a rare hearing disorder that has significantly impacted her professional commitments.
In an interaction with NDTV, the singer, who had first disclosed her diagnosis in 2024, said she is “still suffering” from the condition, adding that it has prevented her from taking up new singing assignments. Due to the ongoing health issue, Yagnik has largely stayed away from public appearances and active work in the industry. The disorder, identified as a form of sensorineural hearing loss caused by a viral attack, affects the inner ear and auditory nerves, making it difficult for her to continue recording.
Despite these challenges, the singer was recently honoured with the prestigious Padma Bhushan, recognising her decades-long contribution to Indian music. Speaking about the current state of the music industry, Yagnik expressed her views, saying that “music today has lost its soul,” indicating a sense of disconnect with contemporary trends.
Over the years, Yagnik has remained one of the most prominent voices in Hindi cinema, with a career spanning several decades and thousands of songs across languages. Her absence from active playback singing marks a significant pause in a career that has defined multiple eras of Bollywood music.
Her condition also brings attention to the seriousness of hearing-related disorders, particularly those linked to viral infections and prolonged exposure to high sound levels. Medical experts note that such conditions can be difficult to reverse, often requiring long-term management.
