Aditya Sarpotdar on Munjya 2: “I would rather not make it than deliver something that’s not up to the standard”

Director Aditya Sarpotdar has made clear that a sequel to his 2024 horror comedy Munjya will only happen on his terms, telling Variety India that he refuses to make the film unless the script clears a standard he has set for himself.

“I get a lot of messages about it and it’s good to know people want to watch it. But that’s the point. I can’t disappoint them with something that’s mediocre. I would rather not make it than deliver something that’s not up to the standard,” said Sarpotdar.

He added that timelines do not concern him: “I’m okay with being asked maybe 10 years later, ‘Why didn’t you make it?’ But until I don’t feel that my script matches a certain level or a quality and is something totally new and beyond people’s expectations, I will not make it.”

Munjya, which drew on a lesser-known Konkan folk spirit, crossed Rs. 100 crores worldwide without a major star or franchise backing. The film established director Aditya Sarpotdar as part of Maddock Films' horror comedy universe alongside Stree, Bhediya and Thamma.

Focus shifts to Shakti Shalini

For now, Sarpotdar’s attention is on Shakti Shalini, which has completed filming and moved into post-production. “It was a massive shoot, so the whole planning and execution had to be done meticulously. Right now, what I really want to focus on and get right is Shakti Shalini. That’s the big game,” he said.

The film takes the Maddock universe into new terrain, set in Madhya Pradesh’s Chambal region. “In terms of all the supernatural stuff that we try to bring to our films and in terms of world-building, what was exciting and interesting was to go into a world I hadn’t been to before: MP, specifically Chambal. All of that world is very unique for me,” he said.

The film stars Aneet Padda and Vishal Jethwa, both of whom Sarpotdar described as freeing to direct: “It is very inspiring and liberating to work with young, good talent. Aneet and Vishal are young, talented actors and they bring so much to the table without any fear of being judged or failure.”

While Munjya 2 remains uncertain, Sarpotdar is currently focused on completing Shakti Shalini, choosing to revisit the sequel only when he has a script that meets his standards.
