In the book ‘Aditya Chopra Relives…Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge’, written by Nasreen Munni Kabir, the writer-director-producer shared some interesting trivia about the film’s title. He revealed that when actor-MP Kirron Kher heard the film’s brief outline, she instantly suggested the film’s title should be Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge. Aditya Chopra loved the title as he felt that it matched with the intention of the film. Kirron then laughingly asked for credit in the film. Aditya Chopra surprisingly agreed. So Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge is a rare film that has the credit billing of ‘Title Suggested By’!

Aditya Chopra also reminds that this line is actually from the song ‘Le Jayenge, Le Jayenge, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge’ from the 1974 film Chor Machaye Shor starring Shashi Kapoor and Mumtaz.

Over the years, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge came to be known by its short film – DDLJ. However, in ‘Aditya Chopra Relives…Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge’, the filmmaker doesn’t use this acronym even once. He refers to the film as simply Dilwale. He explained why he never uses the term DDLJ: “The title was long and so pretty soon Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge became DDLJ to everyone. Not that I have an issue with the acronym, but for me it’s like a pet name that someone else has given your child. I don’t mind it or feel offended by it – it’s just that I have always referred to the film as Dilwale, and I think I’ll continue to do so”.

Incidentally, Kirron Kher’s hubby Anupam Kher played a very crucial role in the film, of lead actor Shah Rukh Khan’s factor.
