Adil Hussain reveals, “I quoted FIVE times my usual fee, hoping Kabir Singh’s makers would back out but they agreed”; adds, “I did not read the script; when I saw the film, I thought, ‘What have I done?’”

One of the biggest controversies of 2024 took place when Adil Hussain confessed that he regretted working in the Shahid Kapoor-starrer Kabir Singh (2019). It led to its firebrand director Sandeep Reddy Vanga attacking the actor for his statement. More than 1 ½ years later, Adil Hussain has once again spoken, this time in more detail, on working in Kabir Singh.

In an interview with Mid-Day, Adil Hussain confessed, “It’s my fault that I did not read the script. I was travelling extensively with Mukti Bhawan (2017) then and didn’t have the time to go through the full script or watch the original Telugu version (Arjun Reddy; 2017). I even told my manager to quote five times my usual fee, hoping they’d back out. But they agreed.”

Adil Hussain further said that he accepted the role after reading what he thought was a “brilliantly written scene”. But he got a jolt when he saw the film. He said, “I found it misogynistic. When I saw the film, I thought, ‘What have I done?’.”

He also admitted, “It’s not about what Sandeep Reddy Vanga has done; it’s my responsibility. I could have said no. Several female friends expressed disappointment. It was important for me to say I regret doing that film.”

In April 2024, after Adil spoke about his disappointment of working in Kabir Singh, Sandeep Reddy Vanga thundered, “Ur ‘belief’ in 30 art films didn’t get as much fame to u as ur ‘regret’ of 1 BLOCKBUSTER film did... I regret casting u, knwing that ur greed is bigger than ur passion. NOW I’ll save U from the shame by replacing Ur face with AI help Now smile properly (sic).” It now remains to be seen how the filmmaker reacts this time.

Meanwhile, Sandeep Reddy Vanga is currently busy working on Spirit, starring Prabhas.
