BAFTA-nominated actor Adarsh Gourav has taken an unconventional route to prepare for his role in the upcoming film Tu Yaa Main, where he portrays Maruti, a local rapper from Nalasopara. Rather than relying solely on the script, the actor spent months engaging with Mumbai’s underground hip-hop scene to build depth and authenticity for his character.
“When I came on board Tu Yaa Main and started developing Maruti, I knew very early on that I couldn’t approach this character only through the script,” Adarsh said, emphasising that understanding the environment and mindset of underground rappers was key to portraying the role. The actor then travelled across different neighbourhoods of the city, including Govandi, Nalasopara, Kurla, Dharavi and Andheri, meeting and interacting with local rap artists.
He met and spent time with several prominent names from the underground rap scene. The actor interacted with artists like Vijay Dada, Gravity, Shakespeare, Neazy, Akku, 7 Bantai, Ace, Kinga, Ninja, Yeda Anna and Loca, among others. He not only observed their lifestyle but also participated in jam sessions and discussions around music, ambition and survival. Reflecting on the experience, Adarsh said, “Being around them helped me understand where the hunger comes from, how their sound is rooted in their surroundings, and how music becomes a way of survival, expression, and identity.”
Directed by Bejoy Nambiar and produced by Aanand L Rai’s Colour Yellow in collaboration with Bhanushali Studios, Tu Yaa Main is set to release on February 13, 2026. The film blends elements of romance, survival and contemporary creator culture, with Gourav’s deep dive into Mumbai’s hip-hop world expected to bring a fresh sense of realism to the big screen.
