Ad filmmaker Chinmoy Kashyap sheds light on the aspects of filmmaking
Besides being a filmmaker, he's also a singer and has released a couple of music videos. Chinmoy has a multifaceted persona with a creative mind, and we got a chance to get into a conversation with this talented young man to dive deep into his journey.
Can you share a pivotal moment in your filmmaking journey that significantly influenced your approach as a director?
Well, if you ask me about a pivotal moment, it has to be the time when I entered the advertising world. I was previously an assistant director, and my experience had been limited to assisting on film sets. However, when I began working on my first ad project, it truly changed my perspective. In ad films, you have to deliver everything quickly—all the details, use-case scenarios, and more—within a minute's time frame. This experience significantly influenced my approach as a director.
With over 35 Ads under your belt, is there a particular advertisement project that stands out as the most challenging for you?
Yes, the project that was the most challenging and rewarding at the same time would be the advertisement I created for a national snack brand. I related to the brand because it was pure nostalgia for me. So, when this ad project came to me, I was nervous at first, but everything went well, and the ad was loved by many. It performed exceptionally, leading to numerous new projects coming my way. This was my fourth project, and today I have worked on more than 35 ad projects, with more still in progress.
What do you find most rewarding about bringing your creative visions to life on the big screen?
I find satisfaction in crafting stories that resonate with people and creating a shared experience that transcends the screen and leaves a lasting impact on viewers. The ability to evoke emotions and connect with audiences is the most rewarding part of my creative process.
As a part-time singer, how does your musical passion influence your filmmaking style, and have you integrated music into any of your projects?
I firmly believe that my musical passion significantly influences my filmmaking style. I see music as a powerful tool to enhance storytelling and evoke emotions. I have integrated my musical skills and learning into some projects to create a more immersive and impactful cinematic experience. The fusion of my roles as a filmmaker and singer allows me to explore unique ways of intertwining visuals and music to enrich the overall narrative of my projects.
What advice would you give to aspiring filmmakers, especially those juggling multiple creative roles like directing and singing?
As a multitasker, I advise aspiring filmmakers juggling multiple creative roles to embrace versatility and stay dedicated to their passions. No matter what you do or how much you do, the primacy of time management shouldn't be overlooked. Have focused periods for each endeavour. Try finding synergy between roles, allowing skills from one creative domain to enrich the other. Above all, you should keep learning from challenges and maintain a genuine connection with your artistic expression throughout the journey.
