Aamir Khan backs YouTube for movie releases: “Every Indian should be able to watch films affordably”

en Bollywood News Aamir Khan backs YouTube for movie releases: “Every Indian should be able to watch films affordably”

Aamir explains why the digital platform offers dignity, accessibility, and affordability for Indian audiences — calling it a return to the true spirit of mass media.

Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan has opened up about his vision for making cinema truly accessible to every Indian. In a recent interaction, the actor shared his deep belief in YouTube as a powerful platform for post-theatrical film releases, calling it a “reasonable and dignified” option for the masses.

“We don’t just watch any film,” Aamir said, referring to the selective nature of Indian moviegoers. “We choose which film we want to watch — based on our favorite actor, a good trailer, songs we like, or even strong word-of-mouth.” However, for creators like him, the bigger challenge lies in reaching audiences across demographics. “As a creative person, it is my dream to be able to reach each and every Indian at a rate that is reasonable, at a price that is affordable,” he emphasized.

Aamir believes that YouTube’s pay-per-view or rental model could bring back the idea of cinema as a true mass medium. “A working-class person should be able to watch films with dignity, without resorting to piracy. For Rs.100, a family of 4 or even 6 can legally watch a film together. That’s just Rs. 25 or Rs. 15 per head — even less if you invite your neighbours,” he said with a smile. The actor underlined how digital access has transformed content consumption: “You can watch it in a car, you can watch it in a train, you can watch it in a plane, you can watch it in a bus. Of course, you may need headphones if it's too noisy. But still, you can watch it at home with your family, you can watch it alone in your bedroom”.

This approach, he says, is a pioneering experiment. “This is the first time that after a successful theatrical run, a film is going directly to a pay-per-view model on YouTube. It’s a step toward ensuring that cinema remains inclusive and affordable.”

With this bold move, Aamir Khan seems to be not only adapting to changing times but also redefining what it means to democratize cinema for every Indian.
