9 years of Badlapur: 5 reasons why the Varun Dhawan starrer worked

en Bollywood News 9 years of Badlapur: 5 reasons why the Varun Dhawan starrer worked

The Sriram Raghavan directorial starring Varun Dhawan and Nawazuddin Siddiqui is still remembered.

Ever since his debut in Student Of The Year, Varun Dhawan acquired an image of a mainstream star who can also put in his dance moves. But he surprised his fans and audiences at large when he signed Sriram Raghavan’s intense and dark drama Badlapur. The film revolved around a man called Raghav (Varun) and his supposed revenge from a couple of people for allegedly killing his wife (Yami Gautam) and child. The film also starred Nawazuddin Siddiqui as Liak.

9 years of Badlapur: 5 reasons why the Varun Dhawan starrer worked

Badlapur had various plusses that ensured that the film was not only liked but also achieved success. Here are 5 reasons why the movie worked:

Sriram Raghavan’s touch

Sriram Raghavan is one filmmaker who leaves behind his stamp in every project of his and Badlapur was no exception. Despite the film being a dark drama about cold-blooded revenge, it had the filmmaker’s usual creative style and witty humour. His handling of such a sensitive subject and churning out great performances from his cast was also something one can’t miss.

Varun Dhawan’s new avatar

As mentioned earlier, before Badlapur, Varun Dhawan was known as a conventional hero. But he tried a dark and intense character for the first time in this movie. He completely got into the skin of a man obsessed by a bloody revenge. The ending portion was the icing on the cake as far as his performance was concerned.

Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s presence

Although Varun Dhawan played the main protagonist in Badlapur, Nawazuddin Siddiqui highly succeeded in coming onto his own with a brilliant act as the criminal Liak. Every time he came on screen, he presented something for the audience to appreciate. His character was such that he had to present an undercurrent of humour every now and then and he never overdid it in this aspect. Similarly, the film also had fine supporting acts from Radhika Apte, Vinay Pathak and Huma Qureshi.

Theme song

Sriram Raghavan’s films are not known for being hit music albums (Andhadhun is the only exception), but they always have a theme track that would suit the film’s subject. If Johnny Gaddaar had ‘Hey Johnny,’ Badlapur had the soulful and moving ‘Jee Karda.’ The song arrives at the right moment in the climax, thereby elevating the effect.

Climax

Bollywood has seen countless revenge dramas where the protagonist achieves his goal and experiences a sense of satisfaction. But this is where Badlapur is not just different but also special. The protagonist here goes through a whirlwind of emotions as he realizes his error, which also has a tremendous effect on the audience. This moment played a major role in shaping your opinion about the film.
