While veteran actors like Akshay Kumar and Ajay Devgn haven't shown any apprehensions about doing multistarrers (Housefull 2, Bol Bachchan respectively) and Hrithik Roshan struck gold with Zindagi Naa Milegi Dobara last year, it is the newer bunch of actors who are trying to go solo with a vengeance. As many as eight heroes, who have made a career of doing multistarrers in the past, are now trying their luck by going solo.
They are Riteish Deshmukh, Madhavan, Irrfan Khan, Tusshar Kapoor, Sonu Sood, Sharman Joshi and Kunal Kapoor.
Comments an industry expert, "Riteish had once famously commented that it is futile to change the trend by any unnecessary experimenting. He had said so after his solo film Jaane Kahan Se Aayi Hai had flopped while multistarrers like Housefull and Double Dhamaal were successful. However, he is giving a solo film another shot with Tere Naal Love Ho Gaya. On the other hand, Madhavan had seen a huge success in the form of 3 Idiots but buoyed by the success of Tanu Weds Manu, he is looking at making it two in a row with Jodi Breakers, a solo release."
Same holds good for Tusshar Kapoor who is known most for his Golmaal franchise but is now doing a solo film with Chaar Din Ki Chandni. Ditto for Sharman Joshi who, after a disastrous Toh Baat Pakki, saw respite coming in the form of 3 Idiots but is back to playing a central lead in Ferrari Ki Sawaari.
"At the end of the day every guy who enters the industry wants to be accepted as a solo lead at the least. Also, if at all any such attempts like these have to be made, they have to be within first 10 years of their career. Otherwise regardless of how talented you are, you do tend to get typecast. Arshad Warsi is a clear example as he is now mostly seen in multistarrers despite being well accepted as an actor", a veteran shares his thoughts here.
However, there are some who are still trying their luck hard. Irrfan Khan, who has been in the movie making scene for over two decades, is taking yet another shot at going solo with Paan Singh Tomar. On the other hand Sonu Sood, who again has been in the industry for close to a decade now, hasn't lost hopes especially after his wonderful stint down South. "Maximum may well be a game changer for him", the veteran continues, "As an outsider he has been doing well for himself. It has been a gradual rise for him and there could be a surprise in store here."
It is the same surprise factor that Kunal Kapoor is relying on as well. After playing a strong character role in Don 2, he is now leading the charge for the first time ever in his eight year long career with Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana.
Says a prominent filmmaker on condition of anonymity, "Even if four out of these eight films succeed, it would be good news for Bollywood which is suffering from shortage of heroes. We need more than just the Khans and Kapoors."
