The remarkable success of the release of writer-director duo Radhika Rao and Vinay Sapru's Sanam Teri Kasam has led to jubilation but at the same time, it has stunned the industry. This is because they had no idea that this film enjoyed such an incredible following. In this Bollywood Hungama special feature, we bring to you 5 lessons that the Hindi film industry should learn from its historic success.
1. The Unfulfilled Demand for Love Stories:
There’s a huge audience for intense love stories and Bollywood has hardly made such movies since Sanam Teri Kasam. In fact, barely any such film is in production or is even being made. It's either big-scale action or comedies or rom-coms where the focus is. But love stories have always ruled the roost and Sanam Teri Kasam proves that we can’t ignore this genre any longer.
2. Mass is not always action:
When we think of mass films, all we can think of is a hero bashing up hundreds of people. But then, some of the biggest hits in history like Dilwale Dulhanie Le Jayenge, Hum Aapke Hain Koun, Aashiqui, Kabhi Kabhie etc were not action-based films. Yet, it attracted people in hordes as such films also have a charm.
3. The Power of Tearjerkers, as said by SRK:
At one point, tearjerker was a genre in itself. Hindi films were known for it. When Shah Rukh Khan visited Yale University in 2012, he said, “There are hundreds of Germans who watch our films but they don’t understand Hindi at all. I asked some of them, ‘Why do you like Hindi films?’ One of them told me, ‘I have a button to drive a car, I have a button to make coffee or to go up and down. In Germany, we didn’t have a button to cry. Your films give us that button’!” Sadly, we have stopped being that button. Sanam Teri Kasam appeals to people as it wets their eyes. Many people wrote on social media that they want to re-watch Sanam Teri Kasam as they want to have a ‘good cry’!
4. Rooted music and narrative can never go wrong:
Sanam Teri Kasam’s conflict might seem over-the-top but it works and appeals to the lowest common denominator. Many of our love stories tend to get very urban and the same goes for music. Sanam Teri Kasam’s success proves how the tier 2 and 3 city audience is so important to get numbers and leave a lasting impression. The same goes for its songs. They have a desi touch and it was made at a time when music was not composed keeping Reels in mind. Let’s learn something from that era and create musical magic once again.
5. Industry Myopia and the Need for Better Research:
The industry needs to hire better people and do better research. Many had ZERO idea that Sanam Teri Kasam has such an enviable following; some had even forgotten that such a film exists! It's high time they look beyond the Bandra-to-Juhu belt and realize what the real India is watching and cherishing.
6. Harshvardhan Rane is criminally ignored:
The lead actor of this film, Harshvardhan Rane, became the darling of the females. He has the heights and dashing look and on top of it, he plays the role of a passionate lover who can go to any lengths for his love. Shockingly, the industry didn’t offer love stories to Harshvardhan after Sanam Teri Kasam. The only film which was close to this zone was Tara vs Bilal, but it got a token release sadly. The rest of the films were intense thrillers or action films and many of them didn’t get a proper release in cinemas or even OTT. It's high time he’s offered another love story and if it works out well, then nothing can stop him from becoming a rising star.
