Over the decades, Rajshri Productions has produced a large number of memorable films. The Mahesh Bhatt directorial Saaransh is one such from the banner that has stood the test of time. The movie, which starred Anupam Kher and Rohini Hattangadi in lead roles, recently completes 40 years. It continues to move the audiences even today for its realistic and heartfelt portrayal of grief, moving on and hope amidst hopelessness.
Saaransh is a film that can be seen with the entire family, which is what the banner has always stood for. However, it would come as a surprise to many that it had received an Adult certificate from the CBFC (Central Board of Film Certification) when it had been released in 1984. In fact, it remains the only Rajshri Productions’ movie to get an ‘A’ certification in its over 60 years of history.
This interesting trivia was shared by the Managing Director of Rajshri Productions Kamal Kumar Barjatya in an exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungama at their residence in Mumbai.
Speaking about the reason for the film receiving such a certification, he revealed, “They (CBFC) said that if you remove this one dialogue, we won’t give you A certificate. The dialogue was something with the word ‘aurat’. That was the position of the censors.”
The CBFC said that if they remove the dialogue, they won’t even need to take ‘UA’ certification. “They said that if we remove it, they will directly give ‘U’ certificate. But Mahesh Bhatt said that he won’t remove it. So, we had to accept ‘A’ certificate. Despite that, it did well (at the box office),” he added.
But for the film’s telecast on TV, they had to take a U certificate. “It comes a lot on TV. But it released in theatres with ‘A’ certificate,” added Kamal Kumar Barjatya.
Saaransh told the story of a senior citizen couple BV Pradhan (Kher) and Parvati (Hattangadi) who are trying to come to terms with the tragic loss of their son in a violent incident in the US. They get able support from Pradhan’s best friend Vishwanath (Suhas Bhalekar).
The couple rents out their son’s room to an aspiring actress Sujata (Soni Razdan). She has an affair with Vilas (Madan Jain), the son of a famous politician Gajanan Chitre (Nilu Phule) and gets pregnant. This brings a change in the lives of Pradhan and Parvati, although for different reasons.
