The action musical entertainer Khalnayak (1993) completed 31 years on August 6. Starring Sanjay Dutt, Madhuri Dixit and Jackie Shroff, the film was a runaway hit because of the mass appeal, casting and superhit songs especially ‘Choli Ke Peeche’. This was also a time when Sanjay Dutt was in prison and it added to the film’s hype. On Khalnayak’s 31st anniversary, Subhash Ghai spoke exclusively with Bollywood Hungama about some not-so-known facts about the super hit film.

Subhash Ghai told us, “Khalnayak was declared a super flop unanimously by film and music trading companies who saw the film just two days before the release on 4 August after a late night private screening by a distributor. But on Friday, theatres were running houseful with double the cheering. It went on to create box office history until the 4th week. It also had a golden jubilee 50 week run in several cinemas in India.”

Subhash Ghai further said, “In Delhi, we had 11 premieres on August 7 night with 11 celebrities’ directors and over enthusiastic crowd outside every single theatre.”

Subhash Ghai also said, “Sanjay Dutt as Balram rocked the show along with Madhuri Dixit as Ganga and Jackie Shroff as Ram Sinha. Even today, the audience keeps writing to me to produce Khalnayak 2.”

Last year, on the occasion of Khalnayak’s 30th anniversary, a special show was organized by Radio Nasha and it was attended by the team of the film.
