One of the most loved couples of Bollywood, Ajay Devgn and Kajol, got married on this very day, in 1999. In short, today, February 24, they celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary. On this joyous occasion, Bollywood Hungama brings to you some of the lesser-known aspects of their marriage and a lot more.
1. On the 25th anniversary of Pyaar To Hona Hi Tha(1998) in July 2023, director Anees Bazmee said, “(On the sets of the film), they were quite serious about each other. Unhe dekhkefeel aata tha ki Inshallah shaadi hogi inki.”
2. During an appearance on The Kapil Sharma Show in March 2020, Kajol revealed that she tricked the paparazzi and gave them an incorrect address of the wedding venue. She said, “If I didn’t disclose the venue, they would have dug out the information from somewhere else. I thought I’d give them the wrong address so they would stop looking for it.”
3. Ajay Devgn admitted in a Mid-Day interview about his marriage story saying, “There was no proposal! We became friends and then realized we were seeing each other. One day, we decided to get married. I didn't want to make a big issue out of my marriage. So, I came out of my bedroom, got married on my terrace, and went back to my bedroom!”
4. As per reports, a friend of Kajol clicked pictures of the wedding. They selected 2-3 best photos and sent it to the journalists along with a box of sweets.
5. Komal Nahta in his Film Information Magazine dated February 27, 1999, reported that Ajay Devgn and Kajol’s wedding “was a low-key affair presumably due to the recent demise of Ajay’s grandmother.”
6.Kajol wore a nauvari saree for her wedding. Then, she never wore the Maharashtrian-style saree for two decades until while shooting for Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior(2020), which incidentally also starred Ajay.
7.Both featured in an earlier episode of The Kapil Sharma Show in 2016 wherein they spoke about their hilarious honeymoon tale. Before marriage, Ajay had promised Kajol that he would take her on a two-month-long honeymoon. As planned, they went on a long world tour. One month later, Ajay was so terribly homesick that they cut short their honeymoon.
8.Kajol revealed in an event in 2018 that Ajay is the good cop to their children while she’s a ‘Hitler mother’. She added, “I’m a Hitler mother... I’m a bad cop, Ajay’s a good cop... But the percentage of good cop has dropped in him. He has realized that it is necessary to be a bad cop sometimes. That he can’t always look at the mother to say ‘no’. I’m 30 per cent bad cop, 70 percent good cop.”
9. A few months after their 20th wedding anniversary, Ajay Devgn in an interview with Bombay Times, revealed the secret to their happy marriage: “Being different... I would say that’s what works. If we were similar, maybe things would not have been this way. She speaks a lot; I listen a lot. If both speak, then you know what can happen! We might be different in terms of our personalities, but the basics are the same; we have the same set of morals and ethics.”
10. In another interview with Bombay Times in the same year, Ajay Devgn confessed “Shuru shuru meinproblem hoti hai, phir aadat pad jaati hai.” Kajol explained, “There were times when one of us took the other’s presence for granted. Whenever I did that, he turned around and corrected me and whenever he did that, I brought him back on track. We’ve proven to each other, day after day, that we want to be with each other. There’s no volcanic fire of romance that stays alive for so long, it’s the desire to be together that keeps you going.”
11. During the promotions of her film Helicopter Eelain October 2018, Kajol told Mumbai Mirror, “If he’s behind you, you know he will never let you down. He’s also very dildaar, a far better person than me for sure.” She also credited the honesty in his performances saying, “You believe he can actually uproot a lamp post, race a jeep and beat 20 baddies to a pulp even though I have never seen him pull out a lamp post in real life. His honesty shines through films like Raidand also in comedies which are somewhat unfamiliar territory for him. My kids prefer to watch Ajay’s films over mine because I cry too much and that upsets them. They tell me I should do films like papa’s Golmaal.”
12.Kajol, in an in-depth interview with Mayank Shekhar of Mid-Day, revealed that she was drawn to Ajay while shooting an intense scene in Hulchul (1995), where the latter stops her from slapping him, “And at that moment, there was a voice in my head saying that this person is going to be really important [in my life]. It was an instinct. I was already going around with someone else. So was he. We were just acquaintances sitting on the chair beside each other, working on the same film. Of course, we finished the film, and signed up for another one, three months later. That was the phase where I didn't want to do anything in a film. So I did Gunda Raj(1995) with him. Towards the end of that shoot, our relationship began.”
13. Ajay Devgn is known to be a prankster but hasn’t played any pranks on his beloved wife. In an interview with DNA in 2018, when asked if Ajay and their children have ganged up against her for some mischief, she replied, “Never with me. They just don’t do it to me. I’m quite scary (laughs).”
14. In 2017, Kajol told Mid-Day why she never wanted to start a separate production house and is happy with Ajay’s banner saying, “I don’t find the need to break away from Ajay Devgn Ffilms (ADF). He understands production better than I do, and in this respect, I am happy to be under his shadow.”
15. The same year, Kajol stated that being blunt comes at a huge cost, “Ajay (Devgn) blasts me every other day. I can’t take diplomacy seriously even though it lands my husband in trouble with people in the industry. At parties, he chides me for saying things as is.”
16. In 2016, Kajol featured with Mickey Contractor on ‘Vogue BFFs’ where the latter admitted that he was shocked that the then 23-year-old actress wanted to settle down. Kajol explained why she decided to get hitched at that point, “I feel that it was the right thing for me to do at that point in time. I mean, I had been working already for almost 9 years, so I was ready to calm down on the work front and kind of take it easier. I was doing four to five films a year. So, I didn’t want to do that, I didn’t want to live like that. So when I got married, I assumed now that I was going to get married, I’d do one film a year. I’ll be happier, I’ll be more settled. That’s exactly what I wanted to do.”
17. In a conversation with Times Life in 2015, Kajol opened up extensively about Ajay Devgn. When asked what she likes about him, she answered, “(Laughs) That he lets me talk. I really love the man. I respect him for who he is. He has grown, evolved and changed for the good. He started off being an amazing guy and continues to be so. If he says something, he means it. He doesn't say much but whatever he says, he does it. His pet name is Babaji. Everyone comes to him for advice.” As to what she doesn’t like about Ajay, she said, “Sometimes, I like the fact that he doesn't talk much and sometimes I hate the fact that he doesn't talk much. I'm like why are you so quiet... There will be no conversation between us if we don't talk.” She also joked, “The one thing he'd love to have in his hands would be a remote to press the mute button on me.” She further revealed, “My husband is my best friend. I tell him all that's happening in my life. Whenever I need to vent, my husband gets it from me even if he's 5,000 km away. I've to talk to him and tell him. He's my go-to guy.”
18. While promoting Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge’s (1995) 1000 weeks on The Kapil Sharma Show, Kajol further emphasized about Ajay being a man of few words. She spoke about her first impression of the Singhamactor, “I kept waiting for him to say something and to my surprise, he did not utter a single word. Even today, when I ask him how I am looking, all I get is expressions and I have to read between the lines.”
