25 Years of Kuch Kuch Hota Hai: “If I had to make Kuch Kuch Hota Hai again, I would correct the gender politics” – Karan Johar

en Bollywood News 25 Years of Kuch Kuch Hota Hai: “If I had to make Kuch Kuch Hota Hai again, I would correct the gender politics” – Karan Johar

One of the biggest hits of Indian cinema, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998), completed 25 years on October 16 this year. Starring Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol and Rani Mukerji, it tells the story of a young guy who falls in love with a hottie in college. While doing so, he breaks the heart of his female friend, who loves him immensely. The guy marries his girlfriend, and she dies after giving birth to a daughter. The daughter turns 8 years old, and she tries to reunite her father and his female friend. In today’s times, a lot of questions are raised about the logic in the script and also the depiction of female characters. Director Karan Johar once even said that it was a silly film.

During an interaction held by Pinkvilla, Karan Johar was asked about why he said so. He began by saying, “I got a lot of hate for that. I understand that Kuch Kuch Hota Hai has lived on an emotional legacy. It has so much of nostalgia.”

He then explained whether his twin children would do the same for him the way Anjali tries to reunite her father Rahul with Anjali, “I am not sure how proactive they would be. They are definitely not going to go to search for the lost love of mine. They won’t have the comprehension.”

KJo then questioned the whole track of the dying mother leaving 8 letters for her daughter for her first 8 birthdays, “Also, how did this dying Rani know that 8 years later, Kajol would remain unmarried and in no relationship? I also couldn’t understand what the first or second or third letter must have said!”

Karan Johar also remarked, “Now that we are speaking the language of the woke world, the gender politics of the film is not something that I am very proud of. If I had to make Kuch Kuch Hota Hai again, I would correct the gender politics. I understood with experience and evolution how important it is what we show on celluloid and how communication is critical. The film has some illogical and inappropriate parts in terms of gender politics which I wish were different.”

He then revealed how Shabana Azmi admonished him after watching Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, “Shabana ji called me after she saw the film and said, ‘Main aapse kuch puchna chahti hoon. Uske (Anjali ke) chote baal the toh (Rahul ko) pyaar nahin hua. Baal bade ho gaye, khoobsurat ho gayi toh pyaar ho gaya. Iske baare mein aap kya kehna chahenge?’. I said, ‘Main bas maafi maangna chahoonga’!”

KJo signed off by making it clear that, “I am very proud of the film. I am here today because of Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. I was speaking objectively (when I called it silly).”
