25 Years of Kuch Kuch Hota Hai: Karan Johar was extremely nervous during the preview screening: “I must have visited the toilet 12 times. It was even worse than appearing for my ICSE exams, some years ago”

Bollywood News

Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998), which celebrates 25 years today, is one of the most loved films of all time. However, before the release, it’s always difficult to fathom whether a film will be able to strike a chord with the audience. Hence, those associated with the film were nervous as hell. Karan Johar was no exception. Komal Nahta's Film Information Magazine's October 10, 1998 issue describes the scenes at the preview screening of the film held on October 6 at Mumbai’s Film City.

As per an article in this issue of Film Information, it was the first preview of the Shah Rukh Khan-Kajol-Rani Mukerji starrer and was for unit members and a few close friends. While Karan was proud to present his labour or love, he was also very nervous. The article states, “As against the normal practice of people frequenting toilets during film shows either out of boredom or on a genuine call, it was the director himself who was running to the toilet more times than anyone else during the KKHH trial”.

The article also carries a quote from Karan Johar about this aspect, “What could I do? I was so nervous. I must have visited the toilet 12 times. It was even worse than appearing for my ICSE exams, some years ago!”

Karan Johar’s autobiography, ‘An Unsuitable Boy’, mentions the first time his father, producer Yash Johar, mother Hiroo Johar and filmmaker-friend Aditya Chopra saw the rough cut of Kuch Kuch Hota Hai at Dimple Theatre. KJo explains that it was a time when their film Duplicate (1998) had flopped and that Yash Johar had taken a huge loan to finish Karan’s directorial debut. Karan wrote, “It was a Rs. 14 crore film at that time. That was a lot. Especially for a new director”.

When Yash Johar and Hiroo Johar saw the film, they couldn’t believe that this wonderful piece of cinema was made by their son. KJo revealed, “My mother’s feet and hands were trembling. The three of us wept for 45 minutes. I’ve seen my father upset and depressed. But I’ve never seen him break down like he did that day.” Karan Johar also mentioned that his father struggled to say “I am proud of you” as every time he opened his mouth, he would choke.

Aditya Chopra later asked Yash Johar, “Does this mean you liked it?” To which Yash Johar replied, “My son has made the best film in the world”!
