Yesterday, June 14, Bollywood Hungama was among the first to inform readers that the much-awaited Cocktail 2 has been granted an 'A' certificate by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). The romcom, starring Shahid Kapoor, Kriti Sanon and Rashmika Mandanna, will release on June 19 and clash with Toy Story 5. Interestingly, it's a case of life coming full circle – when the last Toy Story film was released, it, too, collided with a Shahid Kapoor film, which was also adult-rated.
The film in question is Kabir Singh (2019). It starred Shahid Kapoor and Kiara Advani and was directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga, who has since become one of the industry's most sought-after filmmakers. His next film, Animal (2023), also emerged as a massive blockbuster.
Kabir Singh was released on June 21, 2019, the same day Toy Story 4 arrived in cinemas worldwide. While the Disney-Pixar film performed below expectations in India, it was a massive success globally, earning $1.074 billion at the box office.
And now, 6 years later, history is set to repeat itself. Like Kabir Singh, Cocktail 2 has also been awarded an ‘A’ rating by the CBFC. The same day as its release, viewers will get to watch the next installment of Toy Story, titled Toy Story 5. Cocktail 2 has generated excitement, thanks to its franchise value, chartbuster music, youthful appeal and fresh casting. Its adult certification has only added to the curiosity surrounding the film.
As for Toy Story 5, it belongs to a 31-year-old franchise, which has fans all over the world. Its principal characters, especially Woody and Buzz Lightyear, remain immensely popular. Hence, like its predecessors, the film is expected to take a smashing opening, especially in North America.
Kabir Singh changed Shahid Kapoor's career as it emerged as his biggest solo blockbuster. His films usually open in single digits, but Kabir Singh stunned everyone by collecting a massive Rs. 20.21 crores on its opening day. It eventually amassed Rs. 278.24 crores in its lifetime, leaving the trade and industry speechless. If Cocktail 2 also manages to surprise the trade with a bigger-than-expected opening while clashing with a Disney-Pixar film, it would truly be a remarkable coincidence.
