Ram Gopal Varma arrived in the film world with a bang due to his unconventional choices. Soon, he came to be known as a brave filmmaker who is not afraid to try newer topics. Making films on the underworld became one of his forte. His 2002 saga Company, which starred Ajay Devgn and Vivek Oberoi, is one film that is considered one of his best works.

Shiva (1990)

Shiva is a Telugu-language crime thriller that explores the college campus' criminal underworld. It was dubbed in Hindi and became a success in the Hindi belt too. It followed the story of a young man named Shiva, played by Nagarjuna, who becomes embroiled in the world of crime and violence after seeking justice for his girlfriend's death.

Satya (1998)

Satya is considered one of Ram Gopal Varma’s best work. The film is a crime thriller that delves into the Mumbai underworld’s gritty and dark underbelly. The film follows the journey of a young man named Satya, played by J.D. Chakravarthy, who enters the world of crime and rises through its ranks. He is joined by Bhiku Mhatre, a role made immortal by Manoj Bajpayee.

Company (2002)

Company is a crime drama that explores the rise and fall of a Mumbai-based underworld organization headed by Mallik (Ajay Devgn). He recruits the young and promising Chandu (Vivek Oberoi) who quickly becomes his favorite. However, one assignment ensures that the two become bitter enemies. The film also starred Mohanlal and Manisha Koirala in pivotal roles.

Sarkar (2005)

Inspired by Francis Ford Coppola's The Godfather, Sarkar is one of the most notable works of RGV. Starring Amitabh Bachchan in the titular role, the film revolves around a powerful political leader Subhash Nagre aka Sarkar and his family's involvement in the criminal underworld. The movie also portrays how Subhash’s son Shankar Nagre rises through the ranks.

Rakht Charitra (2010)

Rakht Charitra is a two-part Indian biographical crime film based on the life of gangster-turned-politician Paritala Ravindra, from Andhra Pradesh. The film explores themes of revenge, politics, and the violent underworld. Directed by Ram Gopal Varma, the film stars Vivek Oberoi in the lead role and Radhika Apte opposite him. The second part also featured south star Suriya in a pivotal role as Oberoi’s nemesis.
