The romantic musical drama Bewafaa (2005) completed 21 years on February 25. It had an ensemble star cast, comprising Akshay Kumar, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Anil Kapoor, Manoj Bajpayee, Sushmita Sen and Shamita Shetty and is remembered for its hit soundtrack, touching moments, etc. In an interview with Bharathi S Pradhan, the talented director Dharmesh Darshan opened up like never before on the behind-the-scenes happenings. Earlier in the day, Bollywood Hungama revealed how Dharmesh confessed that he had to “recorrect” Bewafaa after Murder (2004), which had the same plotline as their film, was released.
Later, he revealed, “The soul is missing in the second half. I wanted Akshay to be more passionate, which he is through in his performance. He’s very good-looking. I wanted lovemaking with the repressed wife who was once his girlfriend. Akshay felt that (it won’t be right as) he had played the role of Ram with me (in the 2000 hit Dhadkan). But that was a different film altogether. I explained this to him. But he said, ‘No, Dharmesh, not you getting into this zone’. I clarified, ‘I don’t want to show physical exposure. I want the depth of her attraction to you’. (After all), She’s married to a much older brother-in-law. If that aspect was present in the second half, it would have been a hit film.”
Dharmesh Darshan also remarked, “Bewafaa broke producer Boney Kapoor’s jinx in his own way. This was followed by No Entry (2005). It made Boney good money. It had a superb run internationally. It did well in big cities in India. But unfortunately, it was not a success all over the country. It suffers from a comparison of Dhadkan. But now, when you see it on digital, you realize that it's beautifully shot and also has good performances.”
Bewafaa tells the story of a young woman of Indian origin living in Montreal, Canada, who is in love with an aspiring musician. Her pregnant elder sister blesses their relationship and is prepared to convince their parents about their marriage. But tragedy strikes when the sister dies while giving birth to twins, forcing the younger woman to marry her brother-in-law and part ways with her lover. Years later, the once-struggling musician returns to her life as a celebrated singer, at a time when she is trapped in an incompatible marriage.
