#2023Recap: 8 Trends of 2023 we are FED UP of and don’t want to see in 2024

en Bollywood News #2023Recap: 8 Trends of 2023 we are FED UP of and don’t want to see in 2024

In this special feature, Bollywood Hungama lists 8 trends that we are fed up with and would not like to see again in 2024.

#2023Recap: 8 Trends of 2023 we are FED UP of and don’t want to see in 2024

1. Forced cameos in cinematic universes
Initially, it seemed like a golden idea. Salman Khan’s cameo in Pathaan enhanced the excitement. We also loved Shah Rukh Khan’s appearance in Tiger 3 but this time, it seemed formulaic and predictable. These stars don’t contribute to the principal story and are forced into the narrative for star value. Going forward, we hope these superstars have a crucial part to play in the films in which they have a guest appearance.

2. BOGO
The Buy-One-Get-One (BOGO) ticket-free offer gave moviegoers an incentive to watch a film in cinemas, which they otherwise might have skipped. The offer made sense when implemented when the film was in its last legs in cinemas. But when free tickets are offered from the day of release, it indicates that the producers don’t have confidence in their own products.

3. Politico-religious films
The success of The Kashmir Files has given rise to the ‘politico-religious’ movies. It’s now seen as a formula but there’s no guarantee that it’ll get success. The Kerala Story was a blockbuster but the rest of the films were outright rejected.

4. Token releases
With OTT platforms refusing to take films for direct digital release, the makers are now forced to put their films in cinemas. While doing so, they prefer to minimally promote the film with limited awareness. Dhak Dhak suffered from this model though it was a fine effort. The Lady Killer’s fate was horrible as it was released with zero awareness that too in far-flung theatres. It was sad to see producers only caring about their profits and having no passion towards their films.

5. North vs South debate
The fans went all out to prove that the industry, to which their favourite star belongs, is superior. Even the media contributed to this debate. The common man, however, is just hungry for entertainment and is ready to accept Hindi as well as Southern films with open arms.

6. Events starting 2 hours late
Earlier, promotional events would start with a delay of 1 hour. This year, the organizers just didn’t care and would start events 2 or 3 hours late. There’s a lot of anger among the media over this aspect and if things are not corrected in time, it can lead to issues in 2024.

7. Fights over shows during clashes
The show sharing was done amicably by the makers of Gadar 2 and OMG 2 and by the makers of Animal and Sam Bahadur. But during Dunki and Salaar, a bloodbath happened. Dunki’s distributors forced exhibitors to play all shows of their film. The advance started late and the exhibitors ended up suffering the most.

8. Fudged collections
In August, South Korea was rocked by a controversy when the police unveiled a scam involving producers and multiplexes exaggerating ticket sales for certain films. As per the Hollywood Reporter, “The companies involved are under suspicion of engaging in ‘ghost screenings’, where distributors buy tickets in bulk for late-night or early-morning screenings, where the movie is played to nearly empty theaters, boosting box office rankings”. There’s a fear that such practices might also be prevalent in India and it can lead to a crackdown by the authorities.
