Main Hoon Na (2004), starring Shah Rukh Khan, Sushmita Sen, Zayed Khan and Amrita Rao, completed 20 years on April 30. Directed by Farah Khan, the casting of the film was spot-on. Shah Rukh Khan handled the lead role with perfection, as expected. Zayed was lovely as the goofy and lovable Lucky. Sushmita Sen stole the show and Amrita Rao became a household name with this flick. Suniel Shetty, meanwhile, looked dashing and gave a top-notch performance as the antagonist, Raghavan. Farah Khan, on Rajeev Masand’s audio show ‘Picture Ke Peeche’, shared hilarious anecdotes about finding an actor who could play the villain in this much-loved film.
Farah Khan said, “I went to Kamal Haasan first. Shah Rukh told me, ‘He’ll blindly do the movie. He owes me a favour. I worked in Hey Ram (2000) for him and I suffered during the shoot. I was made to sing Tamil and Telugu songs!”
Sadly, things didn’t go as planned. Farah revealed, “So, I went to Chennai. He was very nice to me. He fed me lunch and even showed me the rushes of the film that he was making. No talk happened about my movie (laughs)! Then he said, ‘I can’t do your movie’. I told him, ‘But you have not even heard the narration’. He replied, ‘I am making a film on the Silk Route’. I remember this very well because I wanted to find out what the Silk Route was!”
Farah Khan continued, “Then, I went to Nana Patekar. He gave me a few pointers which I incorporated into the movie. He asked me, ‘What is my back story?’. At that point, there was no back story. That’s when we wrote (the flashback). He explained, ‘I should have a reason for doing it’. So, we immediately put the back story and we didn’t take him (laughs)!”
Naseeruddin Shah played the role of Shah Rukh Khan and Zayed Khan’s father but even he was considered for Raghavan. At this point, Farah dropped an interesting trivia, “Naseeruddin was named Shekhar because of Shekhar Kapur, who made Masoom (1983),” further adding that the iconic film and Naseeruddin’s track were very similar.
