Kal Ho Naa Ho (2003) is remembered not just for it’s award-winning performances, fine storytelling, humour and touching emotional scenes but also for its unforgettable music. Every song has stood the test of time. The title track has a different fan base thanks to Javed Akhtar’s heartfelt lyrics, its placement in the film and of course, Sonu Nigam’s melodious voice. As Kal Ho Naa Ho completed 20 years on November 28, we bring to you what Sonu had to say about the song.

Sonu Nigam, in an interview with Mumbai Mirror in December 2018, said that when producer Karan Johar asked him to sing the track, Sonu was away shooting for Love In Nepal (2004). Shankar Mahadevan had recorded the demo track and Sonu said in the interview that they could have gone ahead with the former’s voice. Yet, Karan and music directors Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy chose to wait for Sonu.

Sonu Nigam stated, “I was meant to sing the biggest song in the history of Indian film music going by what Karan told me four months ago, and I can only thank God that the most loved song of all time came to me.”

Sonu Nigam sang the track as per director Nikkhil Advani’s vision and instructions. However, five months later, Karan called him again to re-record the song. Sonu revealed, “This time I requested them to let me sing it my way and I was done in 10 minutes.”
