On November 9 15 years ago, Om Shanti Om (2007) was released and it embarked upon a record opening. Despite opposition from Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Saawariya, the Shah Rukh Khan-starrer pulled audiences in hordes as there was tremendous hype. This was mainly due to the subject, massy trailers, hit songs and last but not least, SRK’s shirtless avatar in the song ‘Dard-E-Disco’. While Salman Khan was often seen bare-chested on screen, for Shah Rukh, this was a first. And he looked quite dashing, and this was one of the big reasons that moviegoers decided to check out the film.

Om Shanti Om’s writer, Mushtaq Shaikh, in the book 'The Making Of Om Shanti Om', has touched upon this aspect. He writes that when Farah Khan asked Shah Rukh to go shirtless, he refused to do so until he got six-pack abs. The superstar started working out to get the desired look. Mushtaq Shaikh states, “Every week, Farah would strip Shah Rukh to do an ab check.”

It took him three months to achieve the desired makeover. Once that happened, Farah Khan and his team decided to shoot ‘Dard-E-Disco’. A makeshift gym was constructed in the studio so that Shah Rukh could work out in between the shoot.

Mushtaq then writes that Farah Khan had wanted “very heroine shots” and hence she shot him coming out of the water. Moreover, she also had him in a wet shirt with buckets of water being splashed on him.

Mushtaq Shaikh writes that Farah Khan was pregnant at the time of the shoot. She was sick and constantly puking while handling the song. On the other hand, the rest of the female crew members were having a gala time, as they were ogling at Shah Rukh Khan’s hot body. Mushtaq reveals, “The effect on the female members of the crew was very distracting with some of them having to be dragged off the set while the song was being shot”!
